Barrett Makes Ten

The good news just keeps on rolling for the Ohio State Buckeyes, as they picked up their tenth verbal pledge for the class of 2013 in the form of QB JT Barrett.

Barrett is a 6-2/205 signal caller from Rider High School in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was recently up in Columbus for an unofficial visit with his father and told us then that he had a great time, but was not ready to pull the trigger on a commitment just yet. After a few weeks of thinking, JT decided to give Urban Meyer the good news today, picking the Bucks over other schools such as LSU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Ole Miss, and others.

This pick up is huge for Ohio State, as Barrett is rated as one of the top quarterbacks in the country for 2013 and fits Urban Meyer's offense like a glove. He now becomes the heir apparent to Braxton Miller and will likely have the opportunity to learn under the current OSU quarterback for two seasons when he arrives in Columbus.

Barrett is the first in his position and tenth overall commit for Ohio State in a class that should number somewhere between 15-20. There is more good news sure to come on 11W over the next few days as the Spring Game approaches, so be sure to keep coming back to check the latest scoop.

Hearing great things about this commitment from everyone. He seems to be the ideal fit for our spread and the heir apparent to Braxton Miller. Great pickup by Urban.

Also, Ohio State now has commits from New Jersey, California, Missouri, Texas, and hopefully Florida pretty soon. This Urban Meyer guy is pretty good.

YEAH BABY!!!  Welcome to the Buckeye Nation JT!!!  You are going to LOVE winning a few championships here at THE Ohio State University!!!

Wichita, Kansas? He's from Wichita Falls, Texas right?
Nonetheless IM PUMPED!!!! YES YES YES!!!

HolyBuckeye1093's picture

You are correct. He is from Wichita Falls, Texas. It's a typo.

Run_Fido_Run's picture

With all the fine work you do, you're entitled to a few typos.

Besides, by the geographical standards of Texas - where an intra-state car trip from Amarillo to McAllen takes upwards of 13 hours - Witchita and Witchita Falls (4 hours apart) might as well be two neighboring suburbs of Oklahoma City.

I'll set his typo quota to more than a few haha.  Thanks for your tireless coverage and keeping us updated on the continual good news.  Go Bucks!

This is HUGE!! Hopefully a start to a great recruiting weekend in Columbus. Now if we can get the weather to behave on Saturday. I'm assuming this will be the only QB OSU takes in 2013? Save that scholly for a Jaylon Smith, Derrick Green, or one of the top tier safeties?

Is OSU gonna take 2 QB's in this class? Is Turbisky (spelling?) their lone target? I noticed Chapman and Bailey are both ranked higher on Rivals than Barrett (with all 3 ranked higher than Turbisky. and have OSU listed as possible choices, but do not have OSU offers.

How do you think QB will shape up for us?

bucknasty13's picture

This is my top offensive guy!!!  I'm very excited about this commit!

He has some Braxton-esque footwork, for sure.

JasonBuck's picture

Has tOSU EVER had 10 commits BEFORE the spring game???

btalbert25's picture

I like this because he's a guy Urban wanted.  He's not a guy who the staff needed to wait and see how he does in camps.  This was his QB target and he got him.  This is excellent news.

Run_Fido_Run's picture

I agree - he appears to be an excellent fit for the type of offense that Meyer and Herman want to run.

BrewstersMillions's picture

This is a huge get guys. When you get a QB who fits your system as well as this kid appears to, that instantly becomes the biggest signing of the class. Period. QB's win you a lot of things and if this dude pans out, OSU sets itself up for another 2-4 years of success when you have the right QB in your system.

With all due respect to the current signings and future ones (Bosa and Pocic, eh? eh guys? You like? Ohio State is nice! High Five!) this is the biggest signing of Meyer's young career at OSU.

4-6 seconds from point A to point B and when you get to point B, be pissed off

Awesome news! Almost forgot that he had a good visit here!

Now Hopefully Bosa and Anzalone make it 11 and 12 this weekend. I think they may be coming!

his lateral quickness is very impressive; a really smooth looking qb in my opinion.  it almost looks effortless for him!  now if we can just land bosa and anzalone this weekend we are on a serious roll boys!

Hearing good news on both Bosa AND Anzalone from someone very close to the program---may not happen this weekend but definitely soon...also same guy telling me good news on Courtney Love....one more tidbit from my source: James Quick could end up in this class....not close to happening yet but this weekend will go a long way...I can eat crow and say I was wrong on OSU's interest in Quick and vice versa but we will see this weekend if my guy lets me down or not!

Arizona_Buckeye's picture

Alex - I can't even imagine what would be running through a kid's mind as they stand on the sideline this weekend - looking around and seeing 90 - 100,000 insane fans show up for a practice!!!  Given it is Urban's first Spring Game at OSU and unveiling the new Buckeye offense - it is going to be electric on steriods to say the least!!! It simply has to blow these kids away!!!  Would love to be there in person, but will have to settle for watching it out here in a sports bar - with gorgeous sunny skies!!!

JasonBuck's picture

@Alex, do you see anyone committing this weekend, or do you thnk that everyone waits till next week so each recruit can have his "moment in the sun"?

Alex's picture

I think Love is in this weekend...I think Heuerman is in this weekend (but doesn't announce until 4/27)....I think Anzalone is in this weekend (but may not announce until later)....I think Bosa is in this weekend (but may not announce until later).....I think Worley potentially could be in this weekend.....If Kimbrough is offerd he is in this weekend (definitely an "if")....James Quick may not decide but a big move will be made...Maurice Hurst is one to watch but there may not be room (thank Mr. Sprinkle)....if Trubisky is allowed to he could be in....

Wow that's a lot of potential for commits, huh? :)

Run_Fido_Run's picture

The Buckeyes are recruiting Clarence Worley? Drexl Spivey will not be impressed.

JasonBuck's picture

Yah, that will do it :) (haven't used a smiley face on here before so please forgive me).  I guess I more meant if anyone would commit before Monday but it sounds like only Love could possibly do it before the weekend is out.  Are you at all surprised that Shelton Gibson isn't coming to the spring game?

tennbuckeye19's picture

Seriously. Whats going on with Shelton Gibson? All I've ever heard is that he's a heavy Buckeye lean, but I haven't heard much recently with him. I am surprised he's not coming to the spring game, unless he's got a track meet or something. I figured he would be there and I was hoping for a commit.

hodge's picture

I wouldn't be too concerned, word is he stopped talking to Auburn a while back--and they were most definitely our biggest competitor.  He's just waiting till his mom's birthday in June to commit to the good guys.

JasonR's picture

Alex, if all of your predictions for this weekend come true, isn't Urban going to have to start turning guys away? Where will that leave guys like Pocic, Gibson, Lazard and Green if we're sitting at 16 commits next week and there are supposedly 15 spots (18-20 at most)?

I for one would tell Sprinkle and Heuerman thank for your interest but we regret to inform you that your services will not be needed. We need OL and playmakers a lot more than another DE and TE.

Buckeye06's picture

You'd tell a top 5 TE in the country thanks but no thanks? TEs are an integral part of a Meyer offense and having a combo like we would have could be unstoppable (see the NFL last year in N.E.).

A lot to like right now

JasonR's picture

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have Heuerman in the class. But since we already have a top 5 TE, I would turn him away IF it meant a spot for Pocic, Gibson, Green or possibly Treadwell or Bell. But I certainly wouldn't be upset if he ended up in S&G.

A lot to like indeed!

Buckeye06's picture

Fair enough, but I think him having a bro and being a legacy, and a stud, probably puts him in haha.

I personally would love to have a big TE threat than a guy like Gibson (and that's not hating on Gibson who I want in S&G).  Just watching what they can do in the NFL, if colleges can see that they are just extreme matchup nightmares, it could be huge.  I wouldnt even mind playing a "spread" with a 2 TE set if we have the guys to do it.  I think only NE does that

I wonder if Price or Hurst might me considered for OG to make room.

tennbuckeye19's picture

So you're saying you don't like 30 year olds who throw the ball into the stands?

One of the biggest mistakes of the short-lived Fickell era was not starting Braxton right off the bat in game 1. So what if he was a true freshman. The team was not going to do anything anyway, get the kid in there and give him as much experience as possible. Oh well, thats in the past, onto brighter days in the future.

BrewstersMillions's picture

I support Fickell's decision. Gotta remember guys, he was auditioning for what could have been a full time gig. He had to do what he felt gave OSU the best chance to win. Simply putting Miller in for experience wasn't the right move. We're Ohio Damned State. Not some college farm system where guys come to get experience at the expense of wins. I'll meet you halfway and say Luke erred in sticking with Bauserman as long as he did but to throw caution to the wind because "We weren't going to win anything anyway"? Nah.He had to try to win every game he coached in and Bauserman gave him the best chance to do that before Miller was ready. Having to go with Joe B because he was the best option at the time is the root problem here, but still...

Agreed!  I will say that his coaching experience was based on Tressel who was a big supporter of the depth charts by seniority mentality.  Now, he is learning the Urban - I don't give a shit what your seniority level is - you earn it you start now mentality!!!  I think young Luke will adapt that philosophy very quickly!!!

Squirrel Master's picture

I wouldn't say finally. Guiton will be decent as a backup this year and Cardale Jones is much better than Bauserman!

But this is a huge pickup because it does mean chain of bad QBs (Zwick, Boeckmann and Bauserman) is now going to end.

nickma71's picture

Zwick

Very talented drop back passer that had the exact same problem was we saw last year, that existed from about 2006-2011. An offensive line that isn't worth a shit. They didn't deserve to have Beanie Wells. Smith started because he could get away from the defense that was always in the backfield with the Bollman show. It was hidden with Troy Smith, especially when he had Holmes, Ginn, Pittman, and Gonzalez. Be thankful Smith was there to get us through it.

Boeckmann

Not as good as Zwick. But still 1st team All Big Ten, and National Runner up to a very good LSU team. Much better than last year. Also had no where to run way to often. Pryor starting 3 games in was the wrong move. Pryor did get better as played, a lot better in fact, but it took him way to long. Study time would have helped.

Bauserman

Who? Irrelevant and not a part of the discussion. A decent arm, just not a decent quarterback.

They have almost nothing in common. Why do you ask?

I was thinking the same thing.. I think Cardale has some skills not to be slept on, but nothing wrong with postion battles.

corveyer's picture

I cant wait to see how he does on the Elite 11 show this summer! Trent Dilfer maybe wasn't the best NFL quarterback but I think he's one of the best talent evaluators ESPN has, and despite an off weekend at the Elite 11 camp for JT, Dilfer still gave him a a spot out in California for this summer. Great Great pick up for tOSU!!!

ARMYBUCK's picture

This kid is obviously a great runner but I am extremely impressed with his accuracy, especially on the run... but what stands out even more than both of those is his ability to read the defense and his patience to pull the ball out at the last second.  Wow he's impressive.  Hes reminds me a lot of Randall Cunningham!

bukyze's picture

Boy, I get back to doing actual work for a couple of hours, and surprise!  Did not see this happening so soon with him.  This is effing awesome!  If we can get him another burner to throw to, our offense is going to be sweet.

247 has him listed as a 4.6 in the 40 but his game speed sure looks a hell of a lot faster than that!

BUCKEYES BABY!

BritishBuckeye's picture

If this kid shows up and progresses like he should, it won't be a competition when Braxton leaves. Everything I've seen and heard about Barrett makes me think of Troy Smith and then when I think of that I wonder what Smith would have been like in this new offense with the weapons he had around him (also considering how he played in Tressel's O back then), its scary. I'll call it now before he even starts his senior year of HS, Barrett will be an All American and Heisman contender at Ohio State.

Buckeyeneer's picture

I am pumped that we will have several options at QB going forward. For years it seemed like we were hanging our season on the hope that our QB wouldn't go down with an injury. I mean, Bauserman was #2 behind TP, . . . are you shittin me?!!!! Happy that there will be some capable backups.

Even if he never starts here I could see Cardale Jones being used in goal line situations, he's big a could act as a pounder for short yards.  Oklahoma had a kid this year who came into the game and did exactly that, can't remember the kids name.

Blake Bell. Oklahoma used him like Fred Flinstone, he was a big caveman that ran QB Iso every time they were in a goal line situation.

Wonder if maybe a couple of these commits may move from the DL to the OL down the road?? I could see a kid like Sprinkle moving around some. That future DL is gonna be stacked.

Bj Mullens over Sully's picture

Just a point of thought, JT Barrett hasn't been very active on his twitter, like 3 total tweets, and he's only following 10 guys, one happens to be James Quick, who is one of around 3 other players in the 2013 class he is following, so we could see this get interesting if they have a relationship built.

Sounds like the staff may move Sprinkle to DT. Fine with me, he is already 270lbs. Gets up to 290-295, he is fine!

703Buckeye's picture

Given the guys Urban has and will have at DE (Spence, Washington, Pittman, and Bosa) I can't see Sprinkle being anything other than a DT. I would love to have that kind of quickness and athleticism at DT, especially since Simon is a Senior.

Speaking of position changes, ESPiN needs to get their recruit bios updated. Bosa is listed as a DT, which he blased ESPiN for on Twitter today.
