Bri'onte Dunn: No Longer Wavering

Bri'onte Dunn is a Buckeye. Again. For good.

Former Buckeye and fellow Canton Glen Oak standout Dustin Fox tweeted tonight that the star tailback was no longer stuck between Ohio State and Michigan, and that following Urban Meyer's in-home visit tonight ended his recruitment.

Unlike Tommy Schutt and Se'Von Pittman yesterday, Dunn isn't technically being "poached" from another school, though it's long been thought that he would eventually end up at Michigan where former Buckeye verbal Kyle Kalis had long been encouraging him to make a similar leap.

Fox also tweeted that Meyer is trying to get Dunn enrolled early enough to participate in spring football and that his entire family is thrilled with the decision.

There will not be a January visit to Ann Arbor for Dunn. The next time he is on campus at Michigan he will be wearing his road whites in November 2013.

I agree to a point.  If he just flipped, no big deal; that's life, and he's entitled to do what is best for him.  I didn't care for the semi-grandstanding and declaration of the border now being open.  It's the yapping that ruffled my feathers.  Felt like a knife in the back, and that was something he brought on himself.

That being said, we should go easy on an 18 year old kid.

Speaking of UM, I saw this quote from Rich Rod referring to his recievers coach Tony Dews: “He signed two of the better players in the state to go to that silly school up north,” Rodriguez said. “I wish he didn’t do that. I wish they were here at the U of A.”

Does this mean he's one of us now?

theDuke's picture
theDuke on 13 Dec 2011 - 9:13pm #

this is a sidenote: I don't think he's a Buckeye now, but he definitely shares the hatred for maize and blue.  When they hired RichRod he specifically requested they set up a home and home so that he would have a kind of "parting shot" at scUM.

Tony Dews stepped down from Pitt about 10 days ago to join RichRod out west so he must be referring to Pitt (WVU/Pitt rivalry with Pitt being north of Morgantown) since that is the only school Tony could have just gotten a recruit to commit to join.

Actually rereading the original report, it's definitely UM

–When he introduced receivers coach Tony Dews, Rodriguez noted that Dews was the lead recruiter a few years ago on a pair of four-star recruits — defensive end Craig Roh and offensive tackle Taylor Lewan from Scottsdale Chaparral High. Dews got both players to sign with Michigan.

IF the NCAA comes back with a favorable ruling I think he is in play again.  His whole reason for switching was supposedly because he didn't want to be punished for something that previous OSU players had caused.  Well, if there isn't any real future punishment (bowl ban, tv ban, something like that) than his "reason" holds no water.

With Meyer going totally bonkers in recruiting, I can't help but think someone tipped someone off that things aren't that bad. I mean what happens if the NCAA comes back with a less than favorable decision? I get the strange feeling that OSU and Meyer at least have a good idea about what is to be expected from the NCAA. You have to assume each kid has asked Meyer about what he thinks, you know?

It's bizarre that TTUN fan keeps crying, "it's Dunn's loss, since his skill set will be wasted in the spread offense, whereas he would have thrived in our pro style offense." Okay, maybe TTUN supposedly intends to transition, in the future, to a pro style offense - and who knows how successful that will be - but here's their 2011 rushing numbers:

Denard Robinson: 208 for 1163, 5.6, ave 16 TDs
Fitzgerald Toussaint: 174 for 1011, 5.8 ave, 9 TDs
Vincent Smith: 49 for 296, 6.0 ave, 2 TDs
Michael Shaw: 31 for 199, 6.4 ave, 3 TDs

They are kidding themselves, it is most certainly Michigan's loss.  Ohio State didn't neccessarily have to have him.  Michigan really could've used a dynamic back.  This signing is less about the Buckeyes getting another great player and more about Michigan missing out on a great player.

If I were an offensive player, regardless of position, I would LOVE to play in Urban Meyer's offense.  It is nothing but balls to the wall and score a bunch - the stupidity that a running back can't thrive in that environment is ridiculous.  I'd be licking my chops if I was given the opportunity to play in such a scheme.

Colin with the walrus calling the shots on offense, there was no way that he was going to Let Rod Smith see the field being a red shirt freshman and having two dumb fumbles. Especially the way a younger player could ever take pt away from an older player. The kid showed he knows how to run the rock. He had two horrible brain farts and didnt protect the ball. He is as big as El Guapo and shifty as Hall. With Urbz at the helm Smith will have plenty of time in the backfield very soon. Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Urban has hired away two football staffers from UF, including recruiting whiz Mar Pantoni:

"Recruiting expert Tom Lemming said Pantoni's loss would be a big impact for Will Muschamp's staff as Pantoni had led the Gators' recruiting efforts for the past two years. Lemming said Pantoni's organization is why Florida often started recruiting some of the top players in the country before most other schools.

"He's almost like one of those irreplaceable guys because he does such a good job organizing and putting them in the right direction," said Lemming. "Recruiting-wise, he's worth his weight in gold."

Anyone willing to go out on a limb, and make a prediction in terms of what the pending NCAA ruling might be? I personally think it will be a "Quid-Pro-Quo" type of ruling. I mean we have penalized ourselves significantly. I say it will be just a probationary period, and the loss of the scholarships. That is unless there is some continued "Head Hunting." I don't think there will be a Bowl Ban. FOREVER BUCKEYES!!

Here's how I see it: What's the absolute worst scenario? Has to be USC-style, right? 2 year bowl ban?

1.) Seems highly unlikely, given that all signs point to that Not happening

2.) Even if a bowl ban happens, even more unlikely that its for 2 season

3.) And even if we get a 1 yr bowl ban, SO FREAKING WHAT. Look at USC this past year. Still hauling in 5 star recruits, still wasting their rivals 50-0, and will be pre-season top 10 ranked for sure.

The way I feel now is, What can they possibly do to us? We've got Urbz. We've got a bona fide recruiting avalanche coming in that's unlikely to stop just b/c of some weak-sauce 1 season bowl ban. One of our conference rivals (Penn St) is a smoking crater of fail right now. The other (TSUN) is led by a man with a .500 career coaching record and 1 more bowl win to his resume than I myself have.

WHO IS GOING TO STOP US? Time to stop being afraid and cheer for this Death Star of AWESOME being assembled before us.

WE ARE ALL WITNESSES>

If and when the NCAA hammer doesn't fall, there will be an overwhelming tidalwave of goodness that will sweep over Buckeye Nation from the Heart Of It All to the eastern seaboard, washing 5-star recruites back to Columbus in it's ebb.

Just a general TY to all of the 11W crew.

Either rise to the occasion/growth or you don't. Pretty cut & dry there. While the brain trust has incrementally added features & segments/etc ... in a steady fashion, the content coming out in the past few months has been absurdly good (not that it wasn't before, but being ahead of the curve with the following is great to see). With the influx of traffic, you all deserve that thanks from those of us that have been around to see it.

I know that sporadically I see someone complain about certain things or varying content (heck, ppl might even wax poetic on Atreyu, etc), but the wealth of difference is what I love about this site. Not just FB, BB, ATO, Podcasts, Liveblogs, Recruiting, etc. Such a great blend of direct information, subtle jokes, reminders & completely off-the-range ventures. Keep it up.

Slow Clap. Completely agree with the sentiments expressed. Back two years ago I used to visit several Buckeye sites, now I mainly just check this site (several times a day). There's always something good to read, a laugh to be had, and Buckeye pride. Heck, one of the few things that makes me look forward to Monday is the thought that my Buckeye fix will be there again after the weekend.

I think part of that depends on how OSU finishes the season in the bowl game. Still making up my mind on if going into the season ranked is a good thing or not. We'll see!

Seth4Bucks's picture
Seth4Bucks on 14 Dec 2011 - 1:01am #

I saw ranked. Texas had a worse on the field season then us last season without all the off the field upheaval to help explain away the lackluster season and they still were ranked in one preseason poll and on the cusp of being ranked in another one.

I don't see how we're not ranked preseason with Meyer at the helm, what's shaping up to be a great staff, a top10 recruiting class, and Braxton Miller. That being said, I'd rather finish ranked then start ranked. Preseason polls are great water cooler topics, but they mean diddly squat.

TXBuckeye86's picture
TXBuckeye86 on 14 Dec 2011 - 1:15am #

And hopefully we won't under perform like Texas did AGAIN this year. I'm as optimistic as anyone about the new coaching staff (especially with reguards to recruiting), but we still gotta see em play. Buckeyes have a lot to prove after this season, but I can't imagine them coming out anything other than refreshed, having a chip on their shoulder, and ready to go.

let's see: OL needs reworked, new offensive scheme and we need better linebacker play....hmmm. I don't see why we wouldn't be in the #18 to #25 range.  Braxton Miller is a dynamic difference maker.

way to keep the momentum rolling, Brionte...more commits will come in the following week - I can feel it.

I bet Kalis feels like a fool. He was originally all Buckeye. And, we gotta remember he de-committed right after the sh*t was really hitting the fan, and it was all negative OSU news all day, 24/7 on ESPiN. You knooow Flounder was negative recruiting him, telling him the sky is falling in Columbus. Flounder took advantage of an emotional kid I think. He manipulated him to a degree, perhaps. The Kalis decommit was Kalis' decision, though; and it seemed like it was a knee-jerk reaction --- so quick and to scUM.

Having said that - I'd welcome him back.

I'm sure - he's got to realize now - he made a mistake buying the snake oil from Flounder.

*Next Commitment*:

The next Ohio State commitment for Urban Meyer will be Cyrus Jones (WR/ATH.) from Maryland.

He is visiting this weekend, and will commit within a week. No hard sources, just a gut feeling.

Urban is looking to close out the class with at least an OL or two, same with DE, and LB....and an athlete like Jones or the Caleb kid from Virginia.

Jones is also making the trip with fellow Gillman School teammate Henry Poggi, who is a class of '13 DT blue-chip prospect and also likes OSU.

Expect Cyrus Jones to be the next OSU commitment.

I went over to the Hippy's blog last night to see some of the comments.  They are hilarious.  Pretty much, they are saying Urban really hasn't done anything great recruiting wise.  Pittman wanted to be a Buckeye all along so it wasn't a shock.  Dunn always was a Buckeye anyway.  Schutt pretty much had to end up in Ohio State since his top 2 schools didn't want him and he wanted out of Penn State.  What they fail to see is, if Fickell got a contract for one more season here, these guys don't come on board.  Dodson, Diamond, Cyrus, and all the other recruits that are going to finish this class, probably don't end up Buckeyes.  Sure, these are guys that may have been interested in Ohio State if Ohio State weren't in trouble, but this is a phenominal job Urban has done in short time.  If we have a lesser coach/recruiter, this class may not end up top 20, with him it's going to be possibly top 5.

I also saw where Hoke has done such a phenominal job turning the program around since he's been there, and what Urban has done doesn't compare.  Well no shit, Urban's been with the Buckeyes for what 3 weeks?

Also, Urban doesn't love "Ohio" so he'll never be as good as Hoke who bleeds(gravy) Maize and Blue.
