Potential Improper Benefits Bomb on the Way

Bucknuts' Dave Biddle dropped two tweet bombs on us a few minutes ago:

Could be some bad news on the horizon for OSU football. Hopefully none of this is true. Will report back when I know more.

And:

Possible improper benefits. Players meeting with compliance officials today.

Great.

UPDATE: OSU is denying players met with compliance officers today, but rumors persist of players trading free tattoos for autographs.

I saw Ken G's twitter reply to someone who asked if 10 players were getting suspended, Gordon said all players were at practice

If all players were at practice, does that kill this rumor?

I hope this doesn't involve Duron Carter or Ray Small.

I'm pretty sure every major D 1 program could find some evidence of "improper benefits"  The problem is, since the NCAA side stepped going after Auburn to keep a Non-AQ school out of the BCS title game, they will likely destroy the next team to make an example.  Not good, and as we always say, where there is smoke there is fire.

BuckeyeChief's picture

davebiddle Word is a tattoo artist was giving out free tats in exchange for autographs from OSU players. Again, nothing has been confirmed yet.

"Clutch has no boundaries"

builderofcoalitions's picture

But is that enough for a suspension? My bet is that they'll have to pay for the tats.

Because we couldn't go for three.

NCAA your fucking out!!!....

builderofcoalitions's picture

Troy Smith had to sit out a bowl game. Although he is a Buckeye great, his value to the team at that time was not that big and the team was fine. If one minor player is out because he took a couple of hundred dollars, we'll be fine.

Also, Iowa's had the drug suspension rumors running rampant before they revealed nothing is going on. The meeting could be preventative one. Everyone just needs to relax.

Because we couldn't go for three.

Could be, hopefully they aren't important parts of the team anyway, but it certainly would stink if they had 10 guys get suspended for the bowl game and they included important players like TP.

RBuck's picture

I wouldn't count on it. I don't think the tat artist would want an autograph from a 2nd or 3rd teamer.

Yeah. I doubt dude was trading tats of fire breathing dragons with Block O's on their chest in exchange for Nate Ebner's autograph on a napkin.

J. Hall recently got a new tattoo per his twitter page.  Not saying he's involved just take it fwiw.

Comical. $200,000 for a Heisman, $200 and suspensions for a tattoo

"Clutch has no boundaries"

builderofcoalitions's picture

This is why I don't think anything major will be handed down. Of course, you'd think the players would know better than to exchange anything for their autographs.

Because we couldn't go for three.

Lots of conflicting information out there. Scout and Dispatch are finding nothing, while Biddle/Bucknuts are sticking to their sources. Stay tuned.

Chris Lauderback's picture

The Haters are having a field day. At least some of it is funny. Besides the Legends / Leaders fist tat suggestions, I read one dude say it's confirmed half of the tats were tramp stamps.

FWIW, Bryant is saying the rumor is false.

Mike Sanders's picture

Okay, so let's jump to conclusions and say that the "Tat's For 'Graphs" rumor is true. Does that constitute major violations for the program, or minor?

Buckinnc's picture

I have a mat that will help you jump to those conclusions.

iball's picture

So basically the entire backfield and WR corps are gone for the Sugar?

How in the world do you possibly prove a player exchanges an autograph for a tattoo? Unless there is hard video evidence....

Tweet from Along the Olentangy

TheOlentangy

Seriously, though, that Tattoo report was pretty much trash. All players at practice today and no one met with compliance. Nice fact check.
Jason Priestas's picture

I'm not sure what this proves or disproves. Two things to realize: 1) Scout/BSB and Bucknuts have a big rivalry with regards to breaking information and acquiring readers/members and 2) the guys behind Along the Olentangy are longtime Scout guys.

I don't know if what Biddle said is true or not, but I did hear from someone I trust that there was something to it (involving three players) but it might not blow up.

luckynewman13's picture

I agree that it doesn't prove anything, but I am also following Biddle and while he certainly hasn't retracted anything, he seems to be walking it back little by little...and if there's anything to this whatsoever, it's pretty shocking that nobody else has really picked up on it. But I could be wrong and the major sports media is just waiting for better evidence.

Everyone paid cash for tats, and the autographs were gratis... Please tell Biddle to shut up.

AcrossTheField11's picture

Biddle's an idiot.  I realized that after his interview with Depriest's mother.

This still scares me.  Bucknuts isn't held to the same factual integrity standards that ESPN, Scout, and the Dispatch are.  That may be why none of these have posted anything.

Bucknuts usually pretty "on target" with their sources.  That being said WFNY sure wiffed on the whole Izzo to Cavs report and they are also usually dead on.

Please God let this blow by quick.  I need to sleep tonight.

Time and change will surely show how firm they friendship... O-HI-O.

Bucksfan's picture

Regarding Bucknuts..if you are running an already biased news source, why would you want to spread potentially false rumors that could serve as a distraction to the teams you cover?  Seems like a strange agenda.

luckynewman13's picture

I don't think Biddle or Bucknuts has an agenda against the Buckeyes (obviously, lol), but as Jason stated above, there is a lot of competition for readership between various blogs and Buckeye news media sites. If one of these sites thinks they have a hot exclusive about the topic they cover, then there is going to be a lot of pressure to cover it immediately...even if it doesn't exactly meet the normal fact checking standards. Is there something to this story? Maybe, but its clear to me Biddle should have waited for more information to come in.

Buckknuts had you for lunch.....

Your site is far superior..... do not fall for Dave Piddle's wet diaper droppings......

AcrossTheField11's picture

Bucknuts hasn't even reported it... its solely Biddle's tweet feed as far as I'm aware.

Time and change will surely show how firm they friendship... O-HI-O.

AcrossTheField11's picture

Maybe its just me but since i've subscribed to bucknuts, it seems like all the other Bucknuts writers (Kurelic, Helwagon et al) shy away from Biddle.  He's very good at getting the inside scoop as far as recruiting goes but he always came off to me as the village idiot, albeit valuable to the website as a whole.

That being said, does one usually get a nice paper receipt for ink?  I guess it depends on the tattoo parlor, but I could see a lot of cash transasctions going on, similar to a barber shop.  It'd be very difficult to prove anything, I'd think.

Time and change will surely show how firm they friendship... O-HI-O.

BuckeyeChief's picture

I've got four decent sized ones...cash w/o recipt for all four.

Third one I got in San Diego, and the artist took off about $50 after I bought him a Big Gulp.

Fourth one I got in South Beach...I was wearing a Michael Redd Buckeye jersey, the artist was from somewhere in Ohio, so he gave me a $400 tattoo for $150. Swear to God. Same tattoo in Virginia Beach would cost me $600...shady business.

*As a Sailor, I am a competent authority on tattoo's.

Funny story, guy get to the ship one time, gets drunk in his first port, got a tattoo of his "wife" in dress blues...she was an A cup, tattoo had DD's.

buckeyedude's picture

I don't have a single tattoo on my body(too hairy). You mean to tell me that if I walk into a tattoo parlor(are they still called "parlors"?) with a Big Gulp for Mr. Tattoo Artist, I can save $250?! What kind of business is that?

What if the players in question got the "Leaders" and "Legends" tats on their butt cheeks? Will the NCAA investigate that?

BuckeyeChief's picture

Not $250; $50... Another one in San Diego offered to tatt me in exchange for my gold chain, worth maybe $100 at the time.
