Lightning Round: Ryan Day Says “Everybody Was Out There” at Practice on Wednesday, Will Monitor Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Smith and Lorenzo Styles Jr.’s Health Over the Next 48 Hours
Adam Cairns / Columbus Dispatch
A reporter asked Ryan Day on Wednesday whether he wanted to provide updates on Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Smith and Lorenzo Styles Jr.
"No," the Ohio State coach said with a laugh. “But we did have a good day. Everybody was out there. We’ll see how the next 48 hours go.”
Day addressed several other topics in his brief press conference with the media, including the rushing battle with Michigan, the weather in Ann Arbor and how Ohio State has continued to keep its routine the week of The Game.
-
On whether winning the rushing battle is on his mind entering The Game: “We got to do what it takes to win the game. Everyone’s got to do their job. Coaches and players. That’s the bottom line. What does that take? It takes a lot of things.” Day added: “At the end of the day, the No. 1 goal is to win the game.”
-
On the cold weather expected in Ann Arbor: “That’s what you expect this time of year in Big Ten football. … This is a group of guys that have played in this type of weather before. … That’s just a distraction.”
-
On Jayden Fielding: “We’re gonna count on him to do his job. … This is it. He’s worked up to this point this season.” Day said “guys believe in” Fielding and are confident that Fielding will do his job against Michigan.
-
When asked to provide an update on Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate, Ryan Day smiled and said, “No.” He added: “But we did have a good day. Everybody was out there. We’ll see how the next 48 hours go.”
-
Day said Ohio State wants to keep practice as normal as possible on Thursday, but wants to make sure players have time to be with their friends and family on Thanksgiving.
-
On Austin Siereveld: “He’s a leader for us. Somebody the younger guys look to for leadership. … When he speaks, people listen. He’s somebody that has the respect of the locker room.”
-
Day said Julian Sayin continues to develop with his timing. “Every play has a different story in terms of where your eyes go and where your progression goes.”
-
Day said Ohio State’s decision to fly to Ann Arbor rather than drive was to “keep a routine.” Day said it was “one little thing” the Buckeyes could do to make the week feel as normal as possible.
-
Day said “we’ll see” if there are opportunities to put Lincoln Kienholz in the game. Day said Kienholz has made the most of his chances when he’s been on the field for the Buckeyes.
