For the second time in three seasons, Michigan's head football coach will serve a suspension.
After Jim Harbaugh served two suspensions during the 2023 football season, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel that Sherrone Moore is expected to be suspended for two games in 2025 as part of self-imposed sanctions related to the Connor Stalions advanced scouting scandal.
Moore's suspensions will be for Michigan's Week 3 and Week 4 matchups with Central Michigan and Nebraska. Michigan opens its season at home against New Mexico before traveling to Oklahoma, Moore's alma mater, in Week 2.
Moore will be unable to participate in all team-related activities during the Central Michigan and Nebraska weeks. This marks an important difference between Harbaugh and Moore's penalties, as Harbaugh was allowed to participate in all team-related duties outside of game days.
ESPN reported Moore will receive additional recruiting-related penalties. He could also still face further punishment from the NCAA for his involvement in the Stalions case, which revolves around Moore allegedly deleting 52 text messages between him and Stalions in October 2023, the same day media outlets reported the former Michigan staffer had spearheaded the advanced scouting scheme.
"So, (I) deleted all the information – all Connor, on my personal phone," Moore said in Michigan's response to the NCAA Notice of Allegations, per Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger. "And it wasn't to hide anything, it was just that – I was just extremely angry of, you know, the type of person that would do that to this program and these kids."
Dellenger reported that Michigan highlighted several text messages between Moore and Stalions in its response. While many of them were innocuous, several were related to sign stealing. However, the university noted that "none of the texts were specifically about the in-person advanced scouting scheme," Dellenger wrote.
According to Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde, the NCAA Committee on Infractions has set a hearing for Michigan on June 6 and 7. A final resolution between Michigan and the NCAA is expected before the start of the 2025 season.
