For Ohio State players who typically don’t travel with the team or see the field in competitive games, Saturday’s 52-14 win over Illinois in the Buckeyes’ last home game of the year might have been their final opportunity to play snaps this season.

For Ohio State’s seniors who typically don’t travel with the team or see the field in competitive games, Saturday’s game in Ohio Stadium might have been their final – and in some cases only – opportunity to play snaps in their college football careers.

Ohio State gave all of those seniors that opportunity on Saturday, as all 18 active players who were honored during the Buckeyes’ pregame Senior Day festivities got to take the field for at least one snap against the Fighting Illini.

Three of those seniors – Cin’Quan Haney, Jackson Hayes and Clay Raterman – saw the field for one snap that will likely be both the first and last snap of each of their careers. Trevon Forte saw the field for his third appearance of the season, while Seme made his fourth appearance of the year. The other 13 seniors had already seen regular playing time for the Buckeyes this season, but some of them – including Elijaah Goins, who saw his first non-special teams snaps of the year, and Erick Smith, who led all Ohio State defenders in snaps played on Saturday – saw more playing time than usual too.

Beyond the seniors, a total of 73 Buckeyes – the second-highest total to play in a single game this season – had the opportunity to play in Saturday’s game, as the Buckeyes were able to clear their bench while cruising to what could be their final comfortable victory of the season.

We track all of those players’ snaps, add them to their snap totals and take a closer look at how the Buckeyes divided playing time between players at each position in this week’s edition of Snap Counts.

Author’s note: All snap counts listed in this article were tracked by Eleven Warriors through film review and should be considered unofficial, as Ohio State does not release its official snap counts. The players listed with each special teams unit are the players who were on the field with those units most frequently, but exact special teams snap counts are not included because it is not always possible to identify all 11 players on a special teams unit from TV camera angles.

Quarterbacks

J.T. Barrett: 50 snaps

Dwayne Haskins: 29

Joe Burrow: 10

Barrett’s final game in Ohio Stadium was supposed to be over after 42 snaps, when he was substituted out of the lineup for Haskins with the Buckeyes up 38-0 in the second quarter, but he ended up playing eight more snaps after being re-inserted into the lineup following a Haskins fumble, which Illinois returned for a touchdown, in the third quarter.

Haskins would ultimately return to the game in the fourth quarter, but not before Burrow got a chance to lead the Buckeyes offense on their final possession in the third quarter. Burrow, who had only seen the field in one of Ohio State’s last five games, ended up playing a season-high amount of snaps after returning to the field for the Buckeyes’ final possession of the game.

Running Backs

Antonio Williams: 35

J.K. Dobbins: 32

Mike Weber: 18

Jared Drake: 5

For a second week in a row, Weber led the Buckeyes in rushing yards (108) despite Dobbins (who had 51 rushing yards) playing the majority of snaps at running back with the first-team offense. Williams ended up playing the most snaps of any individual running back, however, as he played nearly all of the snaps at the position when the backup offense was in the game, though Drake – a walk-on who moved to running back from linebacker earlier this season – was also worked into the rotation for a handful of snaps.

Fullbacks

Zach Turnure: 5

In his final home game as a Buckeye, Turnure – who has played on special teams in every game this season – saw playing time on offense for the third time this season as a fullback, a position he moved to after beginning the year as a linebacker, with most of his offensive playing time coming on the Buckeyes’ final possession of the game.

Wide Receivers

Binjimen Victor: 47

Johnnie Dixon: 46

C.J. Saunders: 41

K.J. Hill: 33

Terry McLaurin: 30

Austin Mack: 20

Elijaah Goins: 16

Brendon White: 14

Parris Campbell: 9

Jackson Hayes: 1

Clay Raterman: 1

While Ohio State utilized its usual wide receiver rotation early in Saturday’s game – Mack and Victor at X receiver, McLaurin and Dixon at Z receiver and Campbell and Hill at slot receiver – Victor and Dixon continued to see significant playing time in the second half (with McLaurin, Mack and Hill seeing some as well) even when Ohio State’s backups at the other offensive positions were out of the game. Campbell’s snaps were limited to playing alongside the starters in the early proceedings of the game, as Ohio State continued to be cautious with his playing time in his second game back from a head injury.

After being mixed in for a few snaps at slot receiver with the first-team offense, Saunders was on the field for nearly every play with the offensive backups, resulting in him playing a new season-high in snaps. Goins, who played only on special teams in Ohio State’s first 10 games, got the opportunity to see some playing time at wide receiver with the backups on Senior Day. White, who saw his first playing time on offense against Michigan State after moving to wide receiver from safety, continued to see snaps as a reserve at his new position against Illinois.

Neither Hayes nor Raterman – who, like Saunders, are both walk-ons from Dublin Coffman High School – are actually wide receivers; Hayes is a scout-team linebacker, while Raterman is a scout-team safety. Both players took the field at wide receiver on the first snap of Ohio State’s final possession of the game, however, in order to get on the field for a play in their final home games.

Tight Ends

Marcus Baugh: 41

Rashod Berry: 36

Luke Farrell: 15

While Baugh played the majority of tight end snaps with the starters as he has all season, Berry was mixed in for a healthy dose of snaps with the first-team offense on Saturday, while he also continued to see playing time with the backups into the fourth quarter. All of Farrell’s playing time came when Ohio State had put its backups in the game, with most of his playing time coming at the end of the game.

Offensive Linemen

Jamarco Jones: 50

Michael Jordan: 50

Demetrius Knox: 50

Billy Price: 50

Isaiah Prince: 50

Joshua Alabi: 39

Matthew Burrell: 39

Thayer Munford: 39

Malcolm Pridgeon: 39

Brady Taylor: 39

Kevin Woidke: Special teams only

Like Barrett, the entire starting offensive line – Jones at left tackle, Jordan at left guard, Price at center, Knox at right guard and Prince at right tackle – was removed from the game simultaneously in the second quarter after playing 42 snaps, but returned along with Barrett for eight snaps in the third quarter. The offensive line when Haskins or Burrow was in the game at quarterback consisted of Alabi at left tackle, Pridgeon at left guard, Taylor at center, Burrell at right guard and Munford at right tackle.

Defensive Ends

Chase Young: 19

Nick Bosa: 17

Jonathon Cooper: 17

Jalyn Holmes: 17

Sam Hubbard: 12

Tyquan Lewis: 12

Nick Seme: 2

In a game in which Ohio State’s defense was on the field for only 24 first-half snaps, the Buckeyes’ top four defensive ends of Bosa, Holmes, Hubbard and Lewis rotated in and out with one another – with all four on the field together for five plays in the nickel defense – for the first and second quarters. Young was on the field at defensive end for every Ohio State defensive snap of the second half, while Cooper lined up opposite him for every second-half play but two, on which he was replaced by Seme.

Defensive Tackles

Dre’Mont Jones: 14

Robert Landers: 14

Tracy Sprinkle: 14

Jashon Cornell: 11

Michael Hill: 10

Davon Hamilton: 9

Haskell Garrett: 3

Noah Donald: 2

Dylan Thompson: 1

While Hill started Saturday’s game in place of Jones on an all-senior starting defensive line, Jones still ended up playing a majority of defensive snaps in the first half – including two plays on which the Buckeyes used a five-man front – as did Sprinkle, the Buckeyes’ other starting defensive tackle. Neither Jones nor Sprinkle played in the second half of the game.

Hill was on the field for the Buckeyes’ first three plays of the game but only played two more snaps in the first half, seeing the rest of his snaps alongside backups in the second half, playing into the fourth quarter. Landers, Cornell and Hamilton also rotated in for a few snaps in the first half but saw most of their playing time with the backups in the second half.

Garrett, Donald and Thompson were each worked into the rotation for brief stints in the second half, with Donald – a sophomore walk-on – seeing his first snaps of the entire season.

Linebackers

Malik Harrison: 28

Tuf Borland: 26

Chris Worley: 19

Keandre Jones: 19

Jerome Baker: 15

Baron Browning: 6

Pete Werner: 2

Justin Hilliard: 1

Baker returned from a one-week absence to start Saturday’s game at weakside linebacker, while Worley started at strongside linebacker – his third position in as many weeks – and Borland started in the middle.

Harrison, who lined up alongside Baker in the starting nickel defense, eventually checked in at strongside linebacker with the base defense in the second quarter, when Worley moved to weakside linebacker to relieve Baker. Keandre Jones replaced Worley at weakside linebacker at the start of the second half, while playing alongside Harrison on the second-team nickel defense, but Borland continued to play alongside Jones and Harrison in the base defense until the fourth quarter, when Browning replaced him at middle linebacker.

Werner and Hilliard saw their only defensive playing time of the game on Illinois’ final possession.

Cornerbacks

Kendall Sheffield: 34

Jeffrey Okudah: 25

Denzel Ward: 16

Marcus Williamson: 14

Damon Arnette: 5

Amir Riep: 3

Trevon Forte: Special teams only

Cin’Quan Haney: Special teams only

Ward played each of Ohio State’s first 16 defensive snaps in Saturday’s game before being replaced in the second quarter, with the Buckeyes already holding a commanding lead, by Okudah. Sheffield, who started the game alongside Ward, remained in the game until late in the third quarter, when he was replaced by Williamson.

Arnette, who suffered a thigh bruise in Ohio State’s previous game against Michigan State, was limited to only five snaps on Saturday – mostly at slot cornerback – in the first and early second quarters. That opened the door for Williamson to see some snaps at slot cornerback with the first-team defense, while he continued to play that role in the nickel defense during the second half of the game.

Riep’s three defensive snaps came on the Buckeyes’ final defensive series of the game.

Jeffrey Okudah
A short day for Denzel Ward enabled Jeffrey Okudah to see expanded playing time at cornerback on Saturday.
Safeties

Erick Smith: 40

Damon Webb: 30

Isaiah Pryor: 13

Jahsen Wint: 3

Smith started Saturday’s game in place of Jordan Fuller (who did not play) and remained in the game for every play until the Buckeyes’ final defensive series, when he was replaced by Wint. Webb started the game and remained in the game for every play until the Buckeyes’ final defensive series of the third quarter, when he was replaced for the rest of the game by Pryor.

Amir Riep (gunner)

Zach Turnure (gunner)

Pete Werner (gunner)

Marcus Williamson (gunner)

Mack was only on the field for Ohio State’s first kickoff of the game, after which he was replaced in the lineup by Goins. Hilliard was replaced later in the game by Wint, while Forte replaced Okudah on the Buckeyes’ final kickoff for his only snap of Senior Day. Jones, who had been removed from the kickoff unit after the Penn State game, returned to the unit on Saturday in place of Erick Smith, with Smith taken off the kickoff team because of his starting assignment.

Weber started in place of Campbell at kickoff returner for a third consecutive week, but was replaced as the deep man on each of Illinois’ second-half kickoffs by Saunders. Neither Weber nor Saunders returned a kickoff in Saturday’s game. Williams remained in place for a third consecutive week as the secondary returner.

White took the place typically manned by Jordan Fuller on the kickoff return unit on Saturday, while Werner was added to the unit to take the place usually manned by Erick Smith.

Ohio State used an identical lineup to its previous game on its punting unit with the exception of its final punt of the game, when Kendall Sheffield replaced Okudah as a gunner, Parris Campbell was added to the unit in place of Goins and Cooper moved from his upback spot in the backfield to lining up as a wing blocker on the line of scrimmage.

Punt Returns/Blocks

K.J. Hill (returner)

Nick Bosa or Keandre Jones (rusher/blocker)

Parris Campbell (rusher/blocker)

Amir Riep (rusher/blocker)

Kendall Sheffield (rusher/blocker)

Denzel Ward (rusher/blocker)

Pete Werner (rusher/blocker)

Ohio State used a wide variety of lineups on its punt return/block unit on Saturday, but the players listed above were those who were on the field for at least four of Blake Hayes’ 11 punts for the Illini. The Buckeyes added a new wrinkle to their punt block unit early in the game, putting Bosa and Hubbard on the field in the middle of the formation as interior rushers, but went back to a lineup of smaller players later in the game. Pryor, Riep, Jones and Williams were also new additions to the punt return unit, with Damon Arnette, Austin Mack, Terry McLaurin and Erick Smith being replaced on the unit this week.

Other players who saw snaps on punt returns on Saturday included Elijaah Goins, Malik Harrison, Damon Webb, Brendon White and Cin’Quan Haney, who played his only snap of his Senior Day on Illinois’ final punt of the game.
