The Schottenstein Center will have a new look above center court (and across the arena) beginning next season.
For the first time since 2008, Ohio State is set to replace the scoreboard in the arena, a project that was approved by the Board of Trustees and will begin in April. Eighteen years ago, the replacement and upgrade celebrated the 10th season of basketball played at the Schottenstein Center. Nearly two decades later, it's time to give the arena an updated look.
The project will replace the existing scoreboard at center court, the 360-degree ribbon board and all outdated LED boards and signs. It has a $5.2 million budget and will be completed by September.
The Schottenstein Center's current scoreboard is not only one of the oldest in the Big Ten, but it is also one of the smallest in college basketball, considering the arena's size. While the new scoreboard will likely increase in size slightly, it must still fit within the existing blueprint atop the Schottenstein Center – essentially to "hide" it for other non-basketball and hockey events – and will reuse the hoist as well. Ohio State is limited on the shape and size of the new scoreboard due to this.
