Before and after Ohio State football was dumping Rutgers on Saturday, other varsity sports were doing much of the same.

No. 22 Women's Soccer Shuts Out No. 7 Penn st

Running off the momentum of two Big Ten road wins last weekend, the women's soccer team continued their onslaught against Big Ten opponents of late, this time shutting out No. 7 Penn St at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Saturday night, 1-0.

Both defenses stymied any offensive chances in the first half, thanks large in part to the respective play of the goalies.

Ohio State goaltender Devon Kerr — the reigning Big Ten defensive player of the week — made a sliding stop on a Nittany Lion runner just inside the box to preserve a scoreless tie in the 27th minute.

The first twenty minutes of the second half saw much of the same for Ohio State and Penn St., nothing going and solid defensive play. Long shots with little chance of going in without a rebound were taken, but nothing came of them.

But the mark of a team against a big opponent can be seen in the way the leaders respond. For the Buckeyes, that came in the form of senior forward Sammy Edwards.

In the 65th minute, Edwards played off a long pass going up the left side, gathered the ball on her left foot and into the right corner of the net for the game winner.

Edwards' team-leading sixth goal of the season matches her total from all of last year as well.

The rest of the match, the Ohio State defense had to hold tough as Penn St. came gunning. Despite outshooting the Buckeyes 12-5, the Nittany Lions could not sneak one past Kerr and the Buckeyes held on for a huge conference win.

Field Hockey Rebounds at No. 11 Stanford, UC Davis

Headed west for a California road trip, Ohio State field hockey is coming home with a couple road wins against Stanford and UC Davis, and no they aren't dreaming.

Coming into the weekend with a 4-5 record after having won three of their first four, Ohio State's matchup against against No. 11 Stanford would be a crucial test and the Buckeyes showed sheer will, winning 3-2 in overtime.

Stanford had won seven in a row coming into the game Saturday, though a Ohio State head coach Jarred Martin accounted the win to a complete-facet performance.

"I thought we played really hard today. I'm really proud of the girls. From the defense to the offense, starters to our bench, it was a true team win this afternoon."

After regulation ending with the score being tied 2-2, the Buckeyes got the finisher from Casey Cole off a feed from Maartje Bongers. Her second goal of the season and second goal in overtime this season has proved both valuable in time and place, accounting for two big wins.

Buckeyes Hold Off UC Davis

On Sunday afternoon the Buckeyes concluded their conquest of the west coast, defeating a 1-8 UC Davis squad by a 1-0 tilt.

After a scoreless first half, Natalie Faust scored of a rebound in the 57th minute from a Casey Cole shot to give OSU the only lead they'd need.

The dominating performance saw Ohio State only allow three shots the entire game. Senior goaltender Liz Tamburro's recorded her ninth career shutout in the win.

Men's Soccer Loses Shutouts, Winning Streak

After six straight games of shutouts and wins, the Ohio State men's soccer team hit a wall last week for the first time in over a month, tying Detroit Mercy 2-2 Tuesday night before losing 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Michigan State.

The Buckeyes raced out to a 2-1 lead against Detroit Mercy before the Titans tied it in the 65th minute. The two teams would play to a draw till the end of regulation, setting up a couple wild overtime periods.

After the Buckeyes narrowly missed winning the match on a shot from Niall Logue in the 95th minute, junior Brady Blackwell was given his second yellow card of the match to start the second overtime and therefore given a red card and an early exit from the match.

Forced with to play the remainder of the extra time a man down, the Buckeyes were lucky to escape the match with a draw. The shutout streak was broken, but technically the win streak remained intact.

Buckeyes Overwhelmed by Spartans in East Lansing

After giving up two goals in the previous seven matches, the Buckeyes were bound to give up a few given the law of averages. They gave up five of those in the 5-1 loss to the Spartans.

The No. 16-ranked Buckeyes kept it close in the early-going against the fourth-ranked Spartans.

Junior Alex Nichols scored his first goal of the season past MSU goalie Jimmy Hague to even the score right before half in the 40th minute. Though the lead would be short lived, as Michigan St. scored at 40:42 from Ryan Sierakowski.

After going into halftime only down 2-1, the wheels fell off in the second. MSU got another goal in the 66th minute from Sierakowski, a goal three minutes later from DeJuan Jones and one more for measure in the 88th minute from Michael Beckett.

Even after the streak snapping, the Buckeyes must focus back on the new goal: getting back in the win column. They'll do so with a big test against No. 3 Maryland this Friday night at home.

Men's Golf: Wetterich has Another Top-5 Finish

Coming off a top-five finish in Toledo at the Inverness Invitational, Ohio State junior Daniel Wetterich fired off another top-five finish. This time, the Cincinnati native did it in his hometown at the Bearcat Invitational, finishing third with rounds of 69, 63 and 71.

Overall, the Buckeyes finished 6th out of 13 teams. Will Grimmer followed up Wetterich's strong performance with an 11th place finish of his own.

Justin Wick finished +1 for the tournament in just his second career event, good enough for T-26. Caden Orewiler tied for 47th finishing six-over, rounded up by Will Voetsch and Caleb Ramirez tying for 50th at seven-over.

The Buckeyes are currently competing at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational in Portland, Ore.

Women's Volleyball Suffers Two B1G Road Losses

The Ohio State women's volleyball team collided with both Michigan and Michigan State this weekend, losing Big Ten conference matches on the road.

Friday night's matchup in Ann Arbor saw the Buckeyes lose in four (25-15, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22) to the No. 23 Wolverines.

Luisa Schirmer and Madison Smeathers both had over ten kills for the Buckeyes, while Hannah Gruensfelder accumulated 24 digs and Taylor Hughes passed Amanda Peterson for eighth place all-time in assists.

Buckeyes Lose Second in a Row at Michigan

Facing another road juggernaut for the second night in a row, Ohio State lost to No.16 Michigan State Saturday night in East Lansing in straight sets (25-13, 25-18, 25-17).

The Buckeyes failed to really get anything going offensively, not reaching over 20 points in a single set.

Ashley Wenz lead the Buckeyes in kills in the loss, tallying nine. Taylor Hughes tallied another 22 assists.

Regardless of the tough losses, Ohio State has a tough matchup coming on Friday back at St. John Arena, as No. 3 Penn St. comes for a 7 p.m. matchup.

Cross Country Runs at Joe Piane Invite

Competing at the Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, Indiana, the women's cross country team ran to an 8th place finish while the men's team came in 21st.

The women were in the middle of the pack of the 21-team race, getting all five scorers with placements in the 50s.

Emily Stoodley led the way for the Buckeyes, finishing 51st in 17:20.4 while Lainey Studebaker was 1.5 seconds behind her, finishing 52nd in 17:21.9.

Rounding out the scoring for the Buckeyes was Sarah Kanney (54th, 17:24), Christine Frederick (56th, 17.26.2) and Abby Nichols (58th, 17:28).

All Ohio State runners except for Frederick were able to achieve personal record times in the 5k race.

On the boys side of the race, Ohio State finished 21st of the 21 teams competing in the race.

Jake Mandel finished at the top of the standings for OSU per usual, getting a personal-best 25:01.4 for 86th place.

The cross country teams will next compete at the Pre Nationals in Louisville Kentucky, Oct. 14.

Fencing Starts with OSU Open, Duals

The Ohio State fencing teams started off the 2017-18 season with a strong performance on both sides of the OSU Open and OSU Duals.

At the OSU Open, the Buckeyes had four winners on the day.

Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger took first in the men's epee while Frederik Koch won the men's sabre and Stas Sudilovsky won the men's foil.

Emma von Dadelszen won the women's epee and Sarah Merza also won the women's sabre.

Overall, the men and women combined for 26 top-10 finishes between all events on both sides.

It was more of the same during the OSU Duals, with both the men and the women going undefeated on the day to a perfect 8-0 record. The teams will next compete at French Field House Nov. 4-5 for the Elite Invitational Duals.
