ICYMI, yesterday Ryan Day's son RJ committed to Northwestern, where Chip Kelly is the OC. RJ is the No. 86 quarterback and No. 1,361 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting class.
Which means that today, he's not an Ohio State quarterback prospect. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner and no.1 pick in the draft was Rivals' No.128 prospect in the 2022 recruiting class.
Fernando Mendoza was not recruited by his hometown program - the Miami Hurricanes - and redshirted at Cal. He then worked his way up the depth chart and then transferred to Indiana his senior year, where he led the Hoosiers to a 16-0 record and the program's first-ever national championship, beating Miami in Miami for the ring.
The exception isn't the rule, but the rule in the game RJ will be playing is that the oldest teams win the most games. What happens if RJ blossoms to a level where, as an older player, he could entertain the notion of playing for a more prestigious program?
Would he stay at Northwestern? Or, if his father is still coaching in Columbus, come home?
