Everyone knows it, even if they can’t put their finger on it. He’s a good coach (maybe great), but there is a weakness that won’t allow him to do the thing that needs to be done.
2 things stood out yesterday.
“We couldn’t get away from the run.” In reality, he needed to get away from the run, but couldn’t out of fear of going off-script. What would an elite coach have done in 2nd half yesterday? Nick Saban benched his starting QB (MVOP of CFP Semi) at halftime of a National Championship game. Day can’t throw a few more short passes? No, it’s out of his comfort zone.
Second, he froze during the postgame fight. His team captain is visibly hurt and irate, and Day can’t muster the courage to even approach him. He can’t actively engage his players to stop, to control themselves. His biggest contribution was to mutter “what happened” to a passerby (getting no answer).
We’ve seen the best we’re ever going to see with Day (a good man).
