Where Have We Seen This Quarterbacking Before...?

After watching The Game on Saturday with disgust, my mom commented "when was the last time our quarterback was this bad?" and it got me thinking that McCord has been quite reminiscent of another signal caller in recent-ish OSU history--Todd Boeckman. The comparisons are shockingly similar: tall, heavy, immobile passer with a cannon arm but accuracy issues who wouldn't lose you the games that you were in control of, but couldn't be counted on to consistently put the team on his back and carry you to the win over Top 5 competition. Also, he was prone to head-scratching misfires.

Eerily like the McCord experience, Boeckman also took the reigns after two years in the program, and essentially won the job due to a lack of serious competition to push him for the role. The pieces around him at OL, defense, and skill position compensated for his shortcomings enough to allow us to back into a national championship, but never seriously contend in it.

His head coach, Jim Tressel, made the hard, but necessary decision to ultimately bench him to accept the growing pains of a player with a higher ultimate ceiling. Let's hope Day has the foresight and courage to do the same when the time comes.
