A bit of a random thread, but as I nostalgically watch games from the '98 season as the 25th anniversary approaches (in which we should be celebrating a natty reunion, but I digress), it got me thinking about where the '98 team stacks up all-time -- especially against the '96 team. I'd be curious to hear thoughts, but a bit of data to consider:
- Both teams went 11-1 and finished #2
- 1998 with a slight edge on strength of record (#1 vs. #2), but 1996 had the stronger strength of schedule (#3 vs. #21)
- Both teams had roughly a 24-27 point average margin of victory. 1996 had a 38-11 average, while 1998 had a 36-12 average.
- 1996 was more balanced offensively, but 1998 was more explosive and gained about 50+ more yards/game. They were similar defensively in terms of yards/game.
- Both teams beat 5 ranked teams, although 1996 had three wins over top-5 teams whereas 1998 beat #7 and #8. 1996 had the signature ASU win.
- 1998 beat Michigan. 1996 did not.
Curious to hear thoughts from others. I do think 1998 was the best in the country that year, but it's hard for 1996 to make that case with that Florida team. '96 better on the O and D lines, but '98 was better offensively and had an elite secondary and LB corps.
