I think the hangover is gone and I’m ready to start thinking with a rational mind. I’ve listened to the negotiators and have decided not to jump off the “fire Day” cliff. He’s a fine coach, elite even. Sure, having an OC in the box should happen, but he deserves this job. So what else needs to change going forward so we can put these two years behind us and play for titles again? To me, I think a running threat at QB is a must.
Now before you start DV’ing me into a locked thread, I’m not suggesting we NEED a guy like JTB running the ball more than Zeke when we pucker up. Quite the contrary, honestly. But against the elite competition, we have stalled on the plus side of the field as the field shrinks and the numbers in the box favor the defense. If you think about the champions of college football going back to the invent of the CFP, you’ll see that EVERY single champion has had a running threat at QB, if at no other time, than in the red zone and on 3rd down. The only team that doesn’t fit this mold? 2020 Alabama. The other QBs?
Deshaun Watson
Jalen Hurts
Tua
Joe Burrow
Trevor Lawrence
Stetson Bennett
At MINIMUM, each of those guys become a threat on 3rd down when the play breaks down, they see man coverage and take off, or in the red zone to add a +1 to the box. This isn’t a “slam CJ” thread either, I honestly just don’t think he has it in his DNA to run, nor has he been coached to do so. Given the gameplan designed for him, he played well. But when a defense can just sit back and keep the game in front of them, it becomes VERY difficult when it shrinks, unless all 6 players eligible to move the ball on offense are THREATS to move the ball.
