Typically the best predictor for how the season will shape up is Vegas odds. At the halfway point the Buckeyes seem to have greatly improved their standing in the two. Here are some interesting numbers.
National Championship Odds(Vegas Insider consensus odds)
- OSU(+185)-OSU has made a massive leap over UGA/Bama in part because of their struggles and OSUs dominance. OSU is rapidly approaching odds on favorite territory and most power rating systems have moved OSU from a FG underdog to UGA/Bama to a FG favorite. Easily the best offense in the country and a top 10 defense. This is all with pretty bad injuries to deal with.
- UGA(+223)-They have looked much more vulnerable since the opening couple weeks. They are still a great team but look much more like a team with a walkon QB and really good but not historic defense. Playing OSU would probably be a bad matchup for them.
- Bama(+240)-They have moved from heavy favorite to third among the top tier and slipping. The bryce Young injury is significant but they have been kinda ok all year. They lose to Texas if Ewers is healthy, went to the last play with A&M, and are now only 7 point favorites against Tennessee. They still have ridiculous talent but not close to the favorites that they were. Wouldnt be confident with Bama's offense against OSU/UGA level defenses.
- Clemson(+1180)-They are interestingly in a tier of their own. Not close to the top teams but have decent chances. Biggest reason would be they are now heavy favorites to win the ACC after beating Wake/NC State and have a great chance to make the playoffs. Low chances of beating the top 3 though.
- USC(+1920) Michigan(+2000) Tennessee(+3900)
Heisman Odds
- CJ Stroud(-140) -Just an overwhelming favorite at this point. Barring injury or a crazy upset OSU will have a pretty historic winner in CJ Stroud. Stroud has crazy stats with 1737 passing and 24 touchdowns halfway through the season. With PSU and Michigan still out there he has two great chances for heisman moments. The significant part is this will be OSUs 8th winner which breaks a 4way tie with OU, ND, and USC at 7.
- Tier2- Caleb Williams(+1000) Bryce Young(+1400) Hendon Hooker(+1400) DTR(+1600) Blake Corum(+1600) Not really a clear 2nd to compete with Stroud. Williams is at 1590 passing and 14TDs. Bryce Young missed a game with bad stats(1200 yards 14TDs)
Odds calculator would put it at a 21% chance that OSU wins both the National Championship and the Heisman.
