September 23rd brings half non-conference and half conference bangers. A Woody Classic Minnesota game that a young Art Schlitcher starred in and some memorable Penn St tilts. Then there’s the Terry Glenn masterpiece v Pitt. Dude absolutely demolished Pitt. There was 1 very embarrassing blemish on the Sept 23rd record to USC. Seems the Buckeyes struggled going west in the late 70s-80s. OSU was 5-1 on Sept 23rd from 1968-2022. I hope you enjoy reminiscing with me.
2017: OSU Run Over Rebels 54-21. #10 Buckeyes and JT Barrett crush UNLV with 5 TD passes in 1st Half. Dwayne Haskins throws for 2 TDs. 7 different receivers catch TDs, including Parris Campbell 69 yd TD, 3-105yds and CJ Saunders, 6-102yds. OSU Defense was led by Nick Bosa, 1 sack, 3TFL. OSU finished with 4 sacks, 13 tfl and 2 ints. Game Video
2006: OSU outlasts Penn St 28-6. #1 Buckeyes score 2 4th qtr defensive TDs to blow open a tight defensive game. Troy Smith struggled against PSU defense 12-22, 115 yds, 1 TD, 2 Ints. The one TD throw was a dazzling Troy Smith scramble dart to Brian Robiskie. Antonio Pittman toted the rock 20 times, 110 yds, scoring the go ahead TD in the 3rd qtr. Joe Pa was ill, left in 2nd qtr and returned on Troy’s 3rd qtr TD pass. Anthony Morelli throws pick 6s to Malcolm Jenkins and Antonio Smith. Game Video
2000: OSU Neuters Nittany Lions 45-6. #12 OSU gets 4 rushing TDs by 4 different RBs and 1 defensive TD to route PSU. Derek Combs rushes for 86 yds and a TD. Steve Bellasari was 10-17, 203 yds, 1 Td, 1 Int. Mike Doss and Matt Wilhem led the defense 8, 7 tackles respectively. Brent Johnson popped Matt Seneca for sack fumble that is scooped up for a TD by Mike Collins. This is the Adam Taliaferro game. Game Video
1995: OSU Pounds Pitt 54-14. Terry Glenn explodes on Pitt, 9 catches 253 yds, 4 Tds, including 75 and 61 yds bombs. Bobby Hoying tosses 5 TDs, 296 yds. Eddie George runs for 122 yds. OSU offense racks up 636 yds. OSU defense had 4 Ints and 1 fumble. Hold Pitt to 264 yds.
1989: OSU Embarrassed by USC 3-42. Todd Marinovich (14-22, 4 TDS, 87 yd TD)and Ricky Ervins (117 yds rushing) torches OSU. Scores first and then USC explodes for 42 pts.OSU only manages 223 yds. There’s nothing fun about this game. Game Video
1978: OSU Grounds Gophers 27-10. Schlitcher and Buckeyes run over Gophers, 300 yards on the ground. Art attempted 8 passes completing 3. OSU defense holds Minny to 99 yds rushing. Tom Cousineau led defense with 11 tackles. Classic Woody Hayes pound the rock game. Even though many thought OSU would pass more with Art at the helm, it never materialized.
