Before the season, the defense was the single biggest question. Jim Knowles was coming in after a tremendous season with Oklahoma State. However, at both Oklahoma State and Duke, he took a step back the first year after taking over. Furthermore, it took him about 7 years at Duke and 4 years and Oklahoma State to really have an excellent defense. I had faith that he wouldn’t take a step back, but I honestly didn’t expect much of a step forward, at least for this year.

After two games, they look like an entirely different unit. All of these players do not resemble the same players as last year, and they never look confused. One good game on defense can be an outlier, two games in a row is genuinely encouraging.

At least when I watched the defense against Arkansas State live, they felt incredibly dominant, despite the 12 points given up. They were dominating the line of scrimmage and were destroying everything Arkansas State wanted to do. Still, they gave up 12 points on the back of a lot of missed tackles and mistakes from the younger guys.

This held up, though. Much like the offense, I was more encouraged the second time I watched it. As a note, when the Leo/Jack is moving around, I denoted it by the gap in which he is occupying at the snap(A, B, C, or D):

7:22 O33 2 10 Pistol Twin TE Pair Boundary 4-2-5 4-3 Under 3 Pass 4 PA Rollout Wheel Burke 17 Burke (-2) just panics a bit here. He actually reads the play pretty well and is in good shape to defend the pass while keeping an eye on the ball, He just panics as soon as the ball in the air. Thankfully, he did the hard part right. Just needs to relax a bit.  Pass Interference.
7:14 O16 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Under 0 Pass 4 Slant Brown 5 Brown gives a small cushion and tackles the runner immediately.
6:39 O11 2 5 Gun Trips 4-2-5 Show Blitz 0 Run   Inside Zone Simon -1 In slow motion this looks like it is going to be a touchdown, but Eichenberg (+2) shots into the backfield, funneling him to Simon (+1) who stops the runner at the line of scrimmage.

Second Quarter
14:48 A30 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 4 PA Streak Burke 58 Burke (-3) gets cooked on the streak, and then gets juked out of his shoes before Flemings gets another twenty yards. He is quick, no doubt, but that was rough.Martinez (+0.5) makes the hustle tackle. Tackling -2.

12:15 A25 1 10 Gun Trips 4-2-5 3-3-5 Base Leo C 1 Run   Split Zone Friday 5 Eichenberg (-1.5) got a little too excited after coming free through the gap. He might have gotten pushed in the back which caused the fall. I know that used to be legal between the tackles but I thought they had changed the rule. Eithe rway,  Chambers (+1) did it correctly. Friday (+1) with a nice tackle to keep it short.
11:37 A30 2 5 Gun 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 4 Tunnel Screen Eichenberg 3 Eichenberg (+1.5) with a huge hit on a wide receiver in the open field. Great tackle. Tackling +1.5.
11:25 A34 3 1 Gun Twin TE Jet Mtn 4-2-5 Field 1 RPO   RPO Swing Pass Johnson 5 Simon (+1) and Hamilton (+1) are immediately in the backfield. Johnson  (-1)  needs to stay to the inside here and push the receiver to the sidelines. Chambers makes the tackle. Tackling -1.
10:22 A39 1 10 Gun Trips 4-2-5 Boundary 2 RPO   RPO Quick Slant Hickman 11 Hickman (-2) is read and misses the tackle. Tackling -2. Flemings has caused all of the missed tackles.
9:55 A50 1 10 Gun 4W 4-2-5 Field 2 Pass   Throw Away Hamilton 0 Hamilton (+1) is the one most likely to cause pressure, but the QB bails probably a little quick. Pressure +1.

9:03 O39 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Read Option 6 Zone Read Johnson 7 Chambers (-1) gets out of position here, though I do think he was being extra conservative due to the blitz. Johnson (+2 with a great tackle in space, especially for a corner. Play-calling -1.
8:19 O32 2 3 Gun 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 4 Hitch Brown 0 Brown (+2) makes a great break on the ball and would have had a pick six with a better throw. I think this is the second straight week I have said that. Play-calling +1.
8:05 O32 3 3 Gun Trips 4-2-5 Over 1 Pass 4 Curl Flat Hickman 2 Hickman (+2) has a long way to go but makes a great tackle in space against the speedy Flemings. Tackling +2.
7:19 O30 4 1 Gun Twin TE Pair Field Jet Mtn 4-2-5 Over 2 Read Option   Inverted Veer Martinez 16 Martinez (-2) probably gets held, but he shoots the wrong gap here. If the wide receiver would have tried to cut it back, Hickman and Eichenberg are there.
6:59 O14 1 10 Gun Trips Bunch 4-2-5 Over 2 Read Option   Zone Read Sawyer 2 Hall (-1) gets sealed inside which would have resulted in a sizeable chunk if not for Sawyer (+2) catching the running back from behind after being read. Very impressive tackle.
6:51 O12 2 8 Pistol Twin TE 4-2-5 Field 2 Run   Split Zone Hall -5 Hall (+1) gets free. The front totally baffled ASU. Play-calling +1.

4:24 A35 1 10 Gun 4W 4-2-5 Boundary 2 RPO   RPO Inside Zone Jean-Baptiste -15 I think Simon (-1) takes the wrong gap here, but I might be wrong. They are pretty varied with their run fills. Chop Block
4:16 A20 1 25 Gun 4-2-5 4-3 Over 4 Penalty   Offsides Cage 5 Cage (-1)

13:04 A14 2 12 Gun 4-2-5 Under 1 Pass 4 Tunnel Screen Burke -1 Burke (+2) runs through the receiver blocking in order to make a TFL. Tremendous play.

12:07 A18 3 8 Gun 5W 4-2-5 Show Blitz 0 Pass 4 Screens Chambers -7 Play-Calling +2. Both ends drop as the linebackers rush. Chambers (+1) is completely unblocked. He gets a point for how quickly he gets to the quarterback. Pressure +2.
10:26 A26 1 10 Gun 4W Jet Mtn 4-2-5 Boundary 5 Run   Fumbled Snap Hall -1 Hall (+2) spins off a block to help get the TFL, though the snap was fumbled.
9:53 A25 2 11 B1G 4-2-5     Penalty   Offsides Sawyer 5 Sawyer (-1)
9:40 A30 2 6 Gun Wing TE 4-2-5 3-3-5 Leo B 0 Run   Split Zone Eichenberg 1 Beautifully executed run fill with Simon (+1) and Eichenberg (+1) crossing to free up Eichenberg for the tackle.
9:10 A31 3 5 Gun Trips Bunch Tight 4-2-5 Show Blitz 1 Pass 4 Spot Simon 0 Simon (+1.5) reads this perfectly and breaks up the pass. He's always been good in coverage. Hall injured
7:35 A29 1 10 Gun Twin TE Pair Field 4-2-5 Under 3 Pass 4 PA Streaks Sawyer 0 There is some pressure here, but honestl y I think the QB bails early.
7:28 A29 2 10 Gun 4-2-5 Under 2 Run   Split Zone Chambers 12 Pretty sure Chambers (-2) can't get to the gap, and gets sealed by the guard.
7:04 A41 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 PAss 4 Dig Johnson 13 Eichenberg and Chambers rush after their men stay to block. I actually like Johnson's (+1) coverage here, just a great pass and a nice catch. Coverage +1. Pressure -1. Play-calling -1 for providing the QB a 7-man protection and going after the backup CB.
6:42 O46 1 10 Gun Y Flex Trips 4-2-5 Over 2 Run   Inside Zone Chambers 7 Chambers (-1) can't make the tackle at the line of scrimmage. Probably needs to fire quicker to make this easier.
5:50 O39 2 3 Gun 4-2-5 Over 1 Run   Split Zone Hamilton -5 Hamilton (+1), Tyleik Williams (+1.5), and Sawyer (+1) all get through their gaps pretty cleanly. Running back had no chance.
5:14 O44 3 8 Gun 4-2-5 Show Blitz 2 Pass 6 Hitch Burke 12 Simon (+1) helps Hamilton get lined up. Eichenberg (+1) gets immediate pressure, but Burke (-2) gets beat underneath and can't make the tackle immediately. Flemings is a different level athlete regarding his quickness. Pressure +2. Play-calling +1.
4:24 O32 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Under 1 Pass 6 TE Flat Proctor 1 Eichenberg (+1) gets through the line immediately and Sawyer (+1) hits the QB. Proctor (+1) comes down hard to make the tackle. Tackling +1. Pressure +2.
3:44 O31 2 9 Gun 4-2-5 Over 2 Pass 4 WR Screen Jean-Baptiste 0 Jean-Baptiste (+2) runs right past the left tackle to the inside, causing a throw away. Pressure +2.
3:41 O31 3 9 Gun 4W 4-2-5 Field 4 Pass 3 Drag Martinez 3 Martinez (+2) has outside leverage, so he has to catch Flemings from behind, which he does quickly. Jean-Baptiste (+2) and Sawyer (+1) get good pressure. Pressure +2. Coverage +2. Field Goal.
Fourth Quarter
15:00 A25 1 10 Gun Y Flex Trips 4-2-5 Over 3 Read Option   Zone Read Simon 1 I think Simon (+1) might have had a more interior gap, but he is able to recognize the runner bouncing it back and mirror it to make the tackle. Illegal formation
14:50 A26 2 9 Gun 4-2-5 Under 2 Pass 5 Ohio Proctor 5 Proctor comes down to make the tackle. Fine all the way around.
14:30 A31 3 4 Gun 4-2-5 Boundary 2 Pass 4 Mesh Scramble Eichenberg 4 Eichenberg is the most likely one to make the play, but he is clipped on the route, and can't make the stop before the line to gain.
13:45 A35 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Boundary 2 Pass 4 Slants Burke 0 Burke (+1) with tight coverage on the slant.
13:33 A35 2 10 Gun Trips 4-2-5 Boundary 1 Run   Inside Zone Williams 2 Tyleik Williams (+1) is in good position to make the tackle.
13:31 A37 3 8 Gun HZ Stack 4-2-5 Show Blitz 1 Penalty   Offsides Williams 5 Tyleik Williams (-1)
13:03 A42 3 3 Gun Trips 4-2-5 Over 2 Read Option   Zone Read Hamilton 2 Curry is read. I don't know if Hamilton (+1.5) is supposed to be two-gapping, but it looks like he does it flawlessly. Well done. Punt.
10:43 A32 1 10 Gun 4-2-5 Over 1 Run   Power Curry -6 Curry (+2) is meant to dive inside the guard, but the guard doesn't get out in time, so he has a free route to the runner. The points are for speed and tackling the running back in a lot of space. Tackling +1.
10:05 A26 2 16 Gun 4-2-5 Field 2 Pass 4 Scramble Curry 1 Curry (+1) does a nice job not overrunning the play. He looks a lot more athletic than I expected.
9:47 A27 3 15 Gun Trips 4-2-5 Wide 4 Pass 4 Pivot Ransom 5 Ransom (+1) has a solid tackle. Tackling +1.
End of Charting

After that game, the causes of the 12 points despite the excellent, for the most part, defense. Denzel Burke had a rough game. There were lots of penalties. There haven’t been any turnovers. And, underneath the surface, the Notre Dame game looks less impressive now.

Still, I think most of the problems were minor and fixable. Here is the defensive chart:

Defensive Chart vs. Arkansas State
Player + - T Percentage Notes
defensive line
zach harrison 5 1 4 83.3 Another good game for him. Really solid piece that is rarely blocked one-on-one.
michael hall 5 1 4 83.3 Looks like a real star.
taron vincent 1 0 1 100.0 Doesn't show up in charting much, but has some nice stunts that frees up one of the ends. Used like a fullback.
jt tuimoloau 4.5 1 3.5 81.8 Probably the defensive end that I trust most so far.
jack sawyer 9 1 8 90.0 Much better than the ND game. Much like Harrison, he got a lot of pressure but did not record a sack.
javonte jean-baptiste 4 0 4 100.0 While he wasn't very consistent in this game, he put the left tackle on skates a couple of times.
tyler friday 1 1 0 50.0 Serviceable, but part of that second tier of defensive ends.
tyleik williams 3.5 1 2.5 77.8 Couple of really nice plays. Hasn't shown that same burst from last year yet, but he also hasn't played as much.
ty hamilton 4.5 0 4.5 100.0 Looks really solid. He looked really solid last year too. I thought he might start, but Mike Hall is clearly just too dynamic.
jerron cage 1 1 0 50.0 Didn't stand out either way. Surprised since he played well in the middle of last season.
jaden mckenzie 1 0 1 100.0 Didn't get a ton of playing time with the 1's.
caden curry 3 0 3 100.0 Looks the part.
total 42.5 7 35.5 85.9 Really solid across the board. There was a defensive lineman in the backfield almost every snap. Running was nearly impossible.
linebacker
tommy eichenberg 11.5 1.5 10 88.5 These scores are ridiculous for a linebacker. Surprisingly dynamic as a blitzer; he completely blows up the lines.
steele chambers 3.5 4 -0.5 46.7 Got nailed for a couple of missed tackles, but those have never been an issue for him. Probably a blip.
cody simon 8.5 1 7.5 89.5 Huge improvement for Week 1. I see why he and Chambers are splitting time. Looks like most of his tackling issues are behind him now that he's healed from injury.
chip trayanum 0 0 0 0 Did not chart.
total 23.5 6.5 17 78.3 Weakness to a strength in a single off-season.
Secondary
cameron brown 3.5 2 1.5 63.6 Great game except for the missed tackles on Flemings
denzel burke 5 9 -4 35.7 Was targetted repeatedly. Flemings got him a couple of times. Good position on a couple and panicked. Not far off.
josh proctor 2 0 2 100.0 Good to see him starting. Was not attacked at all.
lathan ransom 2 0 2 100.0 Stacking good games, though like Proctor, he wasn't targetted much.
tanner Mccallister 1 0 1 100.0 Looked better in coverage this game.
ronnie hickman 2 2 0 50.0 Only negative is a missed tackle on Flemings.
Kourt Williams 0 0 0 0.0 Did not chart.
Cameron Martinez 2.5 3 -0.5 45.5 Got too aggressive on a third and short leading to a big play. Otherwise a good day.
jk johnson 3 1 2 75.0 Good game in his first meaningful action.
jordan hancock 0 0 0 0 DNP
jyaire brown 0 0 0 0 Did not chart.
Kye Stokes 0 0 0 0 Did not chart.
Total 21 17 4 55.3 Good in coverage, good in run support, not so good with tackling.

The front-7 was just spectacular; they were in the backfield almost every snap. The action among the defensive line was spread out evenly among almost everyone who played, so it is hard to really point out anyone in particular. Sawyer and Harrison were getting consistent pressure. Mike Hall looked good again. Vincent almost always absorbs double-teams or clears the way for a stunt by blocking the offensive linemen from coming inside. They certainly didn’t use any linemen like that last year. Regardless of a lack of a single dominant rusher, I have never charted a pressure number like that, ever. Very encouraging for the future of the line.

The linebackers continued from their excellent performance against Notre Dame. Tommy Eichenberg was nearly unblockable. Another monster game for him as a blitzer and as a run defender. Steele Chambers had a couple of missed tackles, though was otherwise quite good. He has never had an issue with missed tackles, so I don’t think it is a significant issue going forward. Cody Simon had the best game I’ve seen him have. He was great in coverage, and he looked good tackling as well. I guessed last year that his issues tackling were almost entirely a result of his injury, which is why it looked like he was trying to tackle players with one arm last year. He looks much better this year, but I do want to see a couple more games of strong tackling before I am comfortable saying it is no longer a problem.

The defensive backs had some issues, though the issues were mostly in the tackling department. The only real coverage busts I saw were from Burke. There was one common thread among all these issues – the Oregon State transfer receiver Champ Flemings. At 5’5” 142 lbs, he is easily the smallest player I have seen at the P5 level, but his quickness speaks for itself. Ohio State is not going to play another player this year with that kind of quickness unless they play Deuce Vaughan and Kansas State in the postseason. Flemings was the cause of almost every missed tackle, and he is a legitimately good player. He was responsible for most of their passing yards, and every defensive back with a tackling minus was due to trying to tackle him. He happened to be lined up with Burke for most of the day.

Burke did struggle in this game, but he had a couple of nice plays that are good reminders of what he is capable of (1Q 9:59, 1Q 4:11, 4Q 13:45 in coverage, 3Q 13:04 on a blown-up screen). The negatives outweigh the positives, though. Burke is in pretty good shape on the first defensive pass interference penalty (1Q 7:52), but he interferes as the receiver is coming out of his route. He can get handsy, but this was unnecessary. He had a chance to break it up legitimately. Two plays later, he does a nice job of staying out in the flat and recognizing the wheel route. I think he is in really great position here and has a chance at an interception before turning around late and trying to faceguard the receiver. While I have no problem using this technique while trailing, Burke is in a good position to play the ball. Guarding the receiver isn’t helpful here. For these two plays, I think he just panics a bit, as it looks good until the ball gets in the air. His other minuses were just getting beat by Flemings.

For me, that is the big takeaway: his issues looked coachable, and I don’t expect him to have these issues by the end of the year. Still, considering he got beat in the Notre Dame game in ways that I thought looked worse, this is a genuine concern for now. I would wait another couple of weeks, but if this shows up as an issue against Toledo, then it will be time to panic.

What should we worry about?

Denzel Burke, just a little. It still isn’t time to full-on panic. It has only been a couple of games, and I think he had a bit of a unique challenge in this game. He was also in good position for some of these plays, he just didn’t finish. That is usually a sign of a guy who will get there sooner rather than later. Still, it is the thing on this defense to keep an eye on the most.

Passing defense in general, also just a little. I still think they are going to be better than they were last year, but I don’t think they will be an elite unit based on the first couple of games. The next couple of games will likely solidify where I think this pass defense can get to. The Notre Dame game left something to be desired, and this game didn’t make me feel a ton better about it. They will be an upgrade, just not as much of an upgrade as the run defense. Though, this could change as quickly as the next week or two. It is still early.

What should we not worry about?

Tackling. The tackling was excellent against Notre Dame, and there were only 6 missed tackles in this one, all while trying to tackle Champ Flemings. Sometimes you face a guy like that. I don’t think they are going to see a player quite like that the rest of the year, so I can’t worry about the tackling too much.

What should we be excited about?

The front 6. The run defense. It is early, but the run defense has been nothing short of elite, and the disruption this front is causing is going to be a nightmare for everyone on the schedule. I still don’t know if I expect a huge pass rush, but I don’t think they are going to get run on much. Considering where this team was a year ago, that is a minor miracle. This is still little more than a hope after two games, though. After the Wisconsin game I will likely have a more refined verdict on the rush defense.
