- This will be the second time the Buckeyes have been ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll when facing Northwestern. OSU defeated the 15th ranked Wildcats 40-30 at Evanston in 2013.
- This is the tenth time these programs have faced each other when both teams are ranked. Ranked Ohio State teams are 6–3 against ranked Northwestern squads and have won four straight under these circumstances.
- 2018 was the last time a game was played when both teams were ranked. No. 6 Ohio State defeated No. 21 Northwestern 45-24 in the Big Ten Championship Game.
- 1962 was the last time a ranked Northwestern team defeated a ranked Ohio State team.

During the decade of the 2000s, 2005 was the only time these teams played when both were ranked. Ohio State was led by the ground attack of Antonio Pittman and Troy Smith. Pittman rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown and Smith contributed 75 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground.
