We are waiting on Justin Field’s potential transfer news and many are wondering if the NCAA will grant Tate Martell immediate eligibility... believing that if they do, the door is wide open to free agency and all sort of shady behavior.
I propose a solution to the mess by permitting a player to transfer without penalty with the proviso that they earn it in the classroom.
(1) Transfer after associates degree or equivalent (1.5-2yrs commitment) to any Non-Conference school.
(2) Transfer after bachelor’s degree (3-4 commitment) to any school of your choice.
This removes the “sit out one year rule” which seems arbitrary & unfair, esp. given coaches freedom to do whatever.
It would keep outgoing coaches from immediately poaching a school of “their players.”
It puts the responsibility on the student athlete to “earn” the transfer by achieving educational goals.
