Many of us are aware of the high profile guys promoted in recent years ie Riley, Swinney and Ftizgerald

But I decided to look up all of the current FBS HCs who were promoted from within and see how they are doing compared to their predecessor

So here goes based on improved win%

1) Cody Lunsford - Ga Southern. He is 12-7 63% since taking over from Tyson Summers who was 5-13

2) David Shaw - Stanford - took over from Harbaugh who was obviously rebuilding the Cardinal, but he is winning at 76% compared to Harbaugh 58%

3) Dabo Swinney - Clemson no duh, Tommy Bowden had been winning at 64% and over his tenure Swinney is now 79% and of course 2 NC

4) Rocky Long SDSU - took over from Hoke when he went to UM, Hoke had been there only 2 years and gone 13-12 while rebuilding, but Long has done quite well going 71-35 or 67%

5) Pat Fitzgerald - NW - Randy Walker had been 22-27 in his last 4 years and Fitz is 96-70

6) Mike Gundy - Okie St - Les Miles was slowly building Okie when he left for LSU and Gundy has kept that momentum up. Miles was 57% his last 4 years and Gundy has been 67%

7) Lincoln Riley - Oklahoma - maybe the most similar to our situation ie a long term success coach leaves. Riley has so far been slightly better than Stoops

8) Mario Critobal - Oregon - big asterisk here as Taggart was only there 1 year and went 7-5 and Cristobal is 9-5

9) Gary Patterson - TCU - Dennis Franchione won at 71% and Patterson has been at 73%, but a caveat in that Franchione coached all in a mid major while Patterson has had several years in the B12

10) Clay Helton - USC - took over from Sarkisian who went at 67% while Helton is 65% so steady

11) Tom Allen - Indiana - Wilson won at 42% over his last 4 years and Allen so far is 40%

12) Ken Niamatalolo - Navy - Paul Johnson won at 70% his last 4 years while coach Ken is at 60% but mainly due to a bad year this year as he went 3-10, prior he was 64%

13) Barry Odom - Mizzou - Pinkell won at 63% over his last 4 years but Odom has been only 19-19

14) Matt Luke - Ole Miss - took over after Freeze blew up the program, but Hugh had been winning at 63% while Luke is only 46%

and finally

15) Kyle Whittingham - Utah - Coach Kyle has had some success including an undefeated season and moving up from the Mt West to the Pac 12, but his overall win pct is 66% and he unfortunately had to follow Urban Meyer who went 22-2 in 2 years there, so he is a full 26 percentage points behind Urban

The interesting thing is, that other than Whittingham and Odom most of the rest were essentially as good or better than their predecessor
