As we look at the bold moves Coach Day has made on the defense time will surely tell if they were good or bad

Of course we as fans can often times jump to quick conclusions based on our perception of the coaches resumes

That said I thought going back to some of the people we hold as the best assistant coaches here since Tressel's arrival and recall what their resumes looked like when we hired them

Mark Dantonio - had never been a DC at an FBS team. Had not been a DC for over a decade at any level. Had been the DB coach for the previous 10 years at Kansas under Glen Mason and at MSU for Saban and then Bobby Williams. Although his pass defenses had been good for MSU, nothing in his resume screamed National Title level defense

Darrell Hazell - had been a WR coach the previous 3 years for Rutgers under Greg Schiano. His 3 years there Rutgers went 8-27. Before that he had been a RB coach at WVU under Don Nehlen where they had gone 11-12 and prior to that was stints at Army and Western Michigan as a WR coach. Nothing essentially to indicate that he would develop Ted Ginn, Santonio Holmes, Anthony Gonzalez, Devier Posey, and Brian Robiskie to the NFL caliber

Tom Herman - had spent the previous years as Iowa State's OC and QB coach and a couple years at Rice in the same role. Had success at Rice but less so at Iowa St

Stan Drayton - initially hired by Tressel to replace Hazzell at WR, when Urban came on he moved to RB. Had been Urban's RB coach from 2005-07 but had bounced around from there to Tenn, then Syracuse then back to UF, and he had only 1 back make it to 1000 yards in a year (Deleone Carter at Syracuse for 1021 and 4.3 YPC) ie nothing to say he would develop guys like Hyde and Zeke in the next coupe years

Kerry Coombs - a former long time successful HS coach, he had been a DB coach at UC where he had some success developing Mike Mickens, DeAngelo Smith and Brandon Underwood, but nothing to hint at his success here, heck he was actually Meyer's 3rd choice having initially intending to retain Taver Johnson, then hiring Bill Sheridan when Taver went to Arky and then finally Coombs when Sheridan went to the NFL TB Bucs and Schiano after only a couple weeks

on the negative side - Everett Withers - had been the interim HC of UNC the previous year going 7-6 after having been their Dc and DB coach the previous 3. He had 7 years of NFL DB coaching experience as well. His UNC defense in 2009 had ranked 6th nationally and he was known for DB and defenses that generated TO's, but his 2 year stint in Cbus was a debacle

So lets not be too quick to judge how this defense will perform as prior results may no indicated future performance
