To my knowledge, this started last season as the "Imperialism Map." This year it has been dubbed the "Empires Map." There are a lot of bullet points and details and analysis in the link, but here's the gist:
- Each NCAA D1 Team starts out with a "territory," which consists of all the counties that are geographically closest to that schools campus.
- Each weeks game is essentially winner take all for each territory that school owns.
As the season progresses, there are interesting "battles" based on which territories are on the line each week. For example, we currently own our original territory in OH, Oregon St.'s, Rutgers, and because Rutgers beat Texas St. week 1, we also took over that territory. Interesting side note, but because Rutgers is the closest D1 campus to NYC, we currently have the empire with the largest population.
Here's to not only owning the CFP trophy at the end of the year, but to owning the country!
