In 1993, his senior year, Finkes placed fourth in the high hurdles at the State of Ohio Track and Field Championships. Earlier that year he won the Division I state wrestling championship as a heavyweight and made the Junior World Team. Finkes was a winner at Ohio State as well. The Buckeyes were 41-8-1 when he played on the team from 1993-1996. During that time the defense held opponents to 15 points per game and had five shut-outs. The 1996 defense holds Ohio State's record for tackles for loss yards in a season with 507 yards.

Matt Finkes also made his mark on the Ohio State record book as an individual. In 1994 he set the all-time record with 80 sack yards lost (he is now 4th). Adolphus Washington is a true junior who has played in 22 games and started five times … he is once again healthy after being slowed throughout last season with a groin issue … that’s a good thing, because Washington can be a really fine player and his presence in the lineup reinforces Ohio State’s already-noteworthy defensive line … he enters his junior campaign with 45 career tackles and 7.5 tackles-for-loss, including five quarterback sacks … Washington has been named an OSU Scholar-Athlete and is majoring in sport industry.
