In the semifinal game versus Alabama I noticed that the Crimson Tide were playing more deep split-safety coverage that I’m used to seeing from them. Cardale Jones had lit up Wisconsin in the B1G Championship Game with the vertical passing game and Nick Saban seemed determined not to let that happen to his team. Saban’s philosophy reminded me of his mentor Bill Belichick’s strategy as Defensive Coordinator of the New York Giants when playing against the strong-armed Randall Cunningham: Belichick used the acronym “GTFB”, meaning Get the F*** Back. Belichick hammered the point home to his secondary that no matter how far the receivers got downfield, the defensive backs were not safe. If a receiver got behind them, it was trouble.
