No more dedicated Offensive /Defensive Coordinators?

What ever happened to the notion of dedicated Offensive and Defensive Coordinators who report directly to the Head Coach?  The Position Coaches then report directly to their respective Coordinators.

Under this approach, the Head Coach is the Chief Executive Officer, while the two coordinators act as the Chief Operating Officers within their specific offensive and defensive expertise.  The pre-game preparations and in-game adjustments necessary within each Position Group are handled by the Position Coach, while the overall strategy and tactics are established by the Coordinators.  There is a clear separation of responsibility and expectations between the big-picture outlook of the Coordinators and the detail-oriented outlook of the Position Coaches.  Special Teams has its own Position Coach.  There is a Recruiting Coordinator, who deals, primarily through the specific Position Coaches, with all aspects of recruitment.  Other coaches, such as Strength and Conditioning, round out the process.  The Head Coach monitors and provides overall leadership of all preparations and efforts throughout this entire process.

Perhaps most significantly, during the game, the Head Coach is on the sideline, the Coordinators are in the Press Box, and the Position Coaches are on the sideline.  Everyone is connected by headset within their respective chain of command.  The Coordinators, from the Press Box, call the plays and defensive formations.  The Coordinators concentrate on the overall offensive and defensive planning and schemes, the Position Coaches, in coordination with the Coordinators, deal with any position issues and details, both with respect to pre-game preparation and in-game adjustments.  The Head Coach continuously monitors both the pre-game and in-game situation.

Has the game been adversely affected by the decline in the use of dedicated offensive/defensive coordinators?  Or is my sense of “the good old days” of dedicated coordinators not accurate or somehow less applicable to the game today?
