Read an interesting article yesterday from the Canton Repository about a book that played a big role in getting Urban Meyer ready to come back to coaching and still impacts the way he goes about things today.
Here is the article: Book, Blackledge Help Meyer Find Peace (excerpt below is from the end of this article).
I haven't read the book, but it looks like it would be worth the time.
“It goes back to the why,” Meyer said. “The whole book is about why you do what you do. You can never forget the why. I forgot the why.
“The journey that life takes you goes in places that you may not expect. It gets back to the why you do this. You do this because of the players and the purpose. This gives me a sense of purpose that I needed to find.”
On Thursday night in New Orleans, Meyer will look across the field and see Saban on the other side. The last time the two of them were in this spot, it didn’t end well for Meyer.
He has found his purpose. Meyer is back home in Ohio. He isn’t chasing wins and championships. Those things will come when the foundation and relationships are on solid footing.
“At Florida, the leader started to change,” Meyer said. “I started to worry about other things because of the great success we had and other issues I was dealing with as opposed to going back to the why. As long as the reason for the why overrules everything else, then everything will take care of itself.”
Maybe that’s the reason Meyer will walk on the field in the Sugar Bowl, look across it, see Saban and just know he’s at peace. He knows the why.
So glad we have Meyer on our sideline.
