I don’t know about most of you, but I’ve had conversations with several people who really dislike the current format of the CFB postseason. So I started thinking about how it could be better. This is my solution, and I’d love to know everyone else’s thoughts.
First, give every team in an America their second bye, except Army/Navy, the week of Veterans Day. Play that game, and only that game the week of Veterans Day.
Next, eliminate conference championship games. They are honestly no longer as meaningful as they used to be.
Play the first round of the playoffs the week after rivalry week. These on-campus games would likely still have students since it’s the first week of December.
Play the quarterfinal games the following week
Play the semifinal games, and only the semifinal games on New Year’s Day. And imo, those two games should always be the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl.
Then play the championship game on the 2nd Monday following New Year’s Day. This year it would be January 12th.
By doing this, it would probably give Army/Navy even more attention. It would eliminate conference championship games, which have become less meaningful and appealing. And it would eliminate any team from being off for an entire month. The New Year’s Day games would always have that legendary feel. And on-campus games would still likely have students on campus since those games will be held the first weekend of December.
