The NCAA stopped short of a postseason ban on Michigan, claiming it would “unfairly penalize student-athletes for the actions of coaches and staff who are no longer associated with the Michigan football program.” Here’s the problem: over 40 current Michigan players, along with head coach Sherrone Moore and other staff members, were part of the program during the scheme. How does the NCAA justify sparing the program a postseason ban to “protect” student-athletes when over 40 players currently on the roster were part of the program during the scheme? If the goal was to avoid punishing those uninvolved, why overlook the fact that nearly half the team and the current head coach were there when it occurred? Why did nobody ask the COI to explain this?
