Previously it benefited you for your conference and schedule to be strong. It seems like with the 12 team playoff and auto bids that isn't as important anymore. Go undefeated as a Power 5 conference champ and it seems like regardless of the SOS you'll most years have the bye. I know teams need to fill the stadium but seem like you don't need to tough out of conference games either.
