Sports Illustrated is reporting eight former and current Rutgers players were arrested last week in connection to a credit card scam.
They would buy credit card numbers off the dark web and use them to add money to their university-issued cards used for dining halls, purchases etc. The "ringleader" former Rutgers linebacker Brendan DeVara originally stole money to pay off parking tickets. He stole $2,400. All in all the group stole just over $11,0000.
Players arrested: Former Rutgers linebacker Brendan DeVara, junior defensive back K.J. Gray, redshirt freshman defensive back Edwin Lopez, redshirt junior linebacker Malik Dixon, redshirt freshman linebacker Syhiem Simmons, sophomore defensive end C.J. Onyechi, senior defensive back Kobe Marfo, and redshirt freshman defensive back Naijee Jones.
DeVara and Gray were dismissed by Rutgers in July. Two others voluntarily left Rutgers. The other four are enrolled but no longer with the football team. None of the eight are currently listed on the Rutgers roster.
