Oklahoma State fired Mike Gundy on Tuesday. He spent over 30 years with the Cowboys, both as a player and coach.

"Cowboy Football reached an unprecedented level of success and national prominence under Coach Gundy's leadership," Oklahoma State athletic director Chad Weiberg said in a press release. "I believe I speak for OSU fans everywhere when I say that we are grateful for all he did to raise the standard and show us all what is possible for Oklahoma State football."

Later in the press release, Oklahoma State president Jim Hess added: "This is a decision about what's best for our football program, our student-athletes and Oklahoma State University and it reflects our unwavering commitment to championship-level football and competing for national success. Coach Gundy dedicated decades of his life to OSU, achieving significant success and positively impacting hundreds of young men who wore the OSU uniform. His contributions to our university, both as a player and coach, deserve our profound respect and will not be forgotten. We are grateful for his service and wish him and his family the very best."

Hess and Weiberg's decision to fire Gundy comes after the veteran head coach told reporters Monday that he "100 percent" intended to remain with the Cowboys after the 2025 season.

"I'm under contract for I think three-and-a-half years," Gundy said. "When I was hired to take this job, ever since that day, I've put my heart and soul into this, and I will continue to do that until at some point, if I say I don't want to do it or if somebody else says we don't want you to do it."

Oklahoma State has lost 11 of its past 12 games dating back to the start of the 2024 season, with 11 consecutive defeats against FBS opponents. That's the longest streak nationally, according to ESPN Research.

In 2025, the Cowboys beat UT Martin 27-7 in the season opener but suffered back-to-back embarrassing losses, 69-3 at Oregon and 19-12 vs. Tulsa, in Weeks 2 and 4. They are scheduled to face Baylor to open Big 12 competition on Saturday.

Gundy ends his tenure with a 170-90 record as Oklahoma State's head coach. He led the Cowboys to eight 10-win seasons and one Big 12 championship in 2011. Gundy won Big 12 Coach of the Year three times (2010, 2011 and 2023) and National Coach of the Year once (2011) in his 20 years leading the program.
