Spencer Keeps Legacy Going

Just days after QB Braxton Miller committed to Ohio State, Vernon Hills (IL) WR Evan Spencer pulled the trigger and gave the Buckeyes their 13th verbal commitment for the class of 2011. Spencer, the son of former Buckeye Tim Spencer, is the first wide receiver to give a pledge to Jim Tressel in this class and chose OSU over offers from Notre Dame, Illinois, Oregon, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and others. At 6-1/185, Spencer has good size to add at a position that could become a bit thin after this year with the loss of Danze Sanzenbacher and Taurian Washington to graduation and the possibility of losing DeVier Posey early to the NFL. It was long assumed he would commit to Ohio State and an announcement was expected this month, but it's certainly worth wondering if the timing of this announcement had anything to do with the Bucks locking down the quarterback position for years to come earlier in the week. The 2011 recruiting class is expected to include 20-22 players, so with 13 already in the bag Jim Tressel is doing quite well. There are a number of talented targets remaining on the radar screen for OSU, but expect Spencer to be one of just two or possibly three receivers in this class. It will be interesting to see the domino effect of the latest commitment and who becomes verbal number 14 for Ohio State.
