Thank you to the patriots that gave their lives in service of the United States of America.

BENEFITS OF PATRIOT WEEK. Urban Meyer debuted Patriot Week last week, which included everything from talks about fallen comrades from Navy SEALs to saying the Pledge of Allegiance to an electronic American flag waving on a practice facility scoreboard before drills.

It affected players, but also the staff. And it taught them lessons they'll carry for the rest of their lives.

From espn.com:

[Ohio State director of player development Ryan] Stamper was around for the early versions of Meyer's educational "Real Life Wednesday" classes at Florida, but they hardly compare to the program he's installed since arriving at Ohio State.

And nothing Meyer has ever attempted before really matches the scale of a weeklong event like Patriot Week, though Stamper admitted he could have used one ahead of the 2008 election when he was still suiting up at linebacker for the Gators.

"I didn't vote -- I could have and I didn't," Stamper said. "I was clueless on this stuff, I wasn't educated on this stuff and I didn't embrace my right to vote."

And so concludes the story of the motivational tactic used by Urban Meyer to make sure his young, unproven team brings the juice during critical summer workouts. His psychology Ph.D. from Oxford paid for itself decades ago.

HERBIE HECKLED OVER WRONG SPORTS PICK. As a fan, I want all the analysts to pick against my team. IT KEEPS 'EM HUNGRY THAT WAY.

But it's personal as a player. So when Kirk Herbstreit picked Texas Christian to beat Baylor in 2014, and Baylor won the game; the Bears made sure Herbie remembered his bad sports #take when he visited their facilities in 2015.

From awfulannouncing.com:

“I walked in last year to a practice and the strength coach called me out, in front of everybody. ‘Who let this guy in here?’ All the players were hooting and hollering because I had said the year before that TCU was a better team than Baylor, and so they fed off of that energy from their strength coach and I’ve never been more disrespected in my entire career than I have been at Baylor.”

It's no wonder Baylor never won shit.

LONG LIVE WOODY HAYES. I would pay $100 to watch Woody Hayes recruit in the era of recruits releasing Top 10 lists via the iPhone note app. When Woody recruited, he wanted #teens to answer on the spot. He also had a trained eye that allowed him to see a quarterback's future at guard.

From dispatch.com:

Russ Nagelson was a quarterback for Deer Park High School in a suburb of Cincinnati when Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes invited him in for a weekend visit. On that Sunday, Hayes called Nagelson and the recruit’s father into his office for what would prove to be a fateful meeting.

“He said, ‘Mr. Nagelson, your son is going to make a fine guard on my team,’” Nagelson said. “My dad said, ‘Coach, Russell is a quarterback,’ and Woody said, “Not on my team. If he wants to play on my team, he’s going to be a guard.’ I almost fell to the floor. I had other Big Ten offers to play quarterback, but I wanted to go to Ohio State. It was like my bubble was burst.”

Not quite. When the two left Hayes, Nagelson was told that Marty Karow wanted to see him in his office. Nagelson didn’t even know who Karow was, but he quickly found out; the OSU baseball coach offered him a full scholarship.

Nagelson went on to win a national championship at Ohio State and play professionally. That 1966 team is the last Buckeye team to win a national title.

Yesterday, the 2016 team clinched the Big Ten and a chance to earn a ticket to the College World Series.
