Ohio State started strong in its tilt against Wilfrid Laurier. The Bucks outshot the Golden Hawks 16-9 in the first period. Dakota Joshua made his presence felt in a big way, netting a pair of goals.

The second period brought more of the same. John Wiitala needed only a minute and change to light the lamp. Then Joshua extended OSU's lead to 4-0. The hat trick was the first collegiate multi-goal outing for the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect.

Wilfrid Laurier got on the board in the middle frame but back-to-back markers from Wiitala and Tommy Parran quickly doused any hope of a Hawks comeback. Captain Nick Schilkey, Mason Jobst, and Janik Moser wrapped up the big Buckeye victory with third period scores.

Sophomores accounted for seven of the team's nine goals and contributed five assists. The class' efforts were led by Joshua (3-1--4), Wiitala (2-2--4), and Jobst (1-2--3). Rookie Tanner Laczynski (0-3--3) was noteworthy in the win as well.

Christian Frey started the game for Ohio State. He manned the net for first 31:23, stopping 12/13 shots. Matt Tomkins took over in the second half and turned aside 11/12.

Next week the OSU men head to the Ice Breaker Tournament. In addition to the team’s season opener, the weekend features some of the toughest opposition on OSU’s schedule, No. 3 Denver and No. 5 Boston College/Air Force.

The Ohio State women’s hockey team has a new look for 2016-17. So far it’s a winning one. The squad kicked off its season this weekend with a sweep of RPI. The wins are the first for new head coach Nadine Muzerall.

In the opener Samantha Bouley and Jincy Dunne scored their first goals as Buckeyes. Tallies from returning scorers Erin Langermeier and Katie Matheny rounded out a 4-1 win. Sophomore Maddy Field provided the firepower in Saturday’s 2-0 victory, scoring twice.

Goaltender Kassidy Sauve, making her return to the Buckeye net after red-shirting last season, was stellar throughout the series. She stopped 67 out of 68 shots on the weekend and sealed the sweep with a superb shutout on Saturday.

The OSU women jump into their conference schedule next weekend, traveling to Wisconsin for a pair of games against the No. 1 ranked Badgers.
