COLLEGE PARK, Md. —  There are different ways to describe dominance. Dropping at least 60 points in back-to-back games is a pretty good place to start.

Ohio State did that on Saturday, throttling an overmatched and talent-depleted Maryland squad on its home turf, 62-3. The No. 5 Buckeyes defeated Nebraska by the same score one week earlier in Columbus.

The back-to-back scoring barrages are the first time the Ohio State football program topped the 60-point plateau in consecutive contests since the 1996 season. That year, the Buckeyes swamped Rice 70-7 and then Pittsburgh 72-0 in the first two games of the season.

A fun highlight from that Pittsburgh destruction was David Boston returning a punt for a touchdown even though he represented one of eight Buckeyes on the field as he ran it back to the end zone.

Nothing wild like that happened on Saturday night in Ohio State's easy win against Maryland but here is what was going on in the world the last time the Buckeyes hit the 60-point mark on the gridiron.

  • Average cost for a gallon of gas was $1.22;
  • The Nintendo 64 hit stores in Japan;
  • A major snowstorm wrecked the Midwest and caused the ability to travel to reach a minimum;
  • "Wannabe" by the Spice Girls was the most popular song in the country;
  • Independence Day is the highest grossing moving in the world, making $817,400,891;
  • Major League Soccer held its debut season;
  • Art Modell moved the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore;
  • Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls win the NBA Championship after posting a then-record 72-10 win-loss mark during the regular season.
