Despite a win over a Navy team that will end up in a bowl, Ohio State fell from No. 5 to No. 8 in the latest AP poll. The slip, obviously, has a lot to do with Braxton Miller's season-ending injury.

Florida State, Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma hold the down the poll's top spots.

Michigan State, the AP's No. 7 team, is the Big Ten's highest ranked team. Wisconsin checks-in at No. 18, and Nebraska comes in at No. 19.

Michigan, much like the Coaches Poll, failed to make an appearance.

The full table can be found here:

Rank SCHOOL Record previous ranking points (1st place votes)
1 Florida State 1-0 1 1,456 (46)
2 Alabama 1-0 2 1,373 (1)

The 2nd half was more of a snapshot of our offense rather than the 1st half.  because I really believe in this coaching staff. our coaches have to have good games also. A victory over VaTech will go along way in  appeasing the h8ters. Navy would roll Jacksonville State, don't tell me a blow out of JState is more impressive than winning going away in the 2nd half against a bowl bound veteran Navy team, I say BS brotha!!!! Agreed, the line themselves said they had an adjustment. They were used to bowling forward on blocks and Navy used their speed to combat that.

I paid particular attention to the Florida State offense.  The O-line in their run game was not very good at all.  I think FSU is beatable, providing a defense can bring a relentless pash-rush and play physical with their WRs.  Sound like any team we know??  ;)

In 2012, Ohio State started the season ranked #18 and climbed to #12 after a 56-10 win against Miami (OH) in week #1 and a week #2 win over UCF by a score of 31-16. Then, in week #3, Cal came to Columbus, played well, and the Buckeyes escaped with a 35-28 win. In the aftermath, the Buckeyes dropped FOUR spots (to #16) for their 7 point home victory. Keep in mind that this same "weak" Cal team would go on a few weeks later to beat #25 UCLA by a score of 43-17...Sure, UCLA dropped out of the AP poll but then re-emerged at #25 after winning their next 2 games over Utah by 7 and Arizona State by 2. In my book, if the #25 team gets beat by a "weak" Cal team by 26 points, they need to do a little bit more than win their next 2 games by a total of 9 points against unranked teams to see the polls again...

Meanwhile, later in the season, Florida lost to Georgia, leaving them at #8 in the AP poll. The Gators followed that game up with 2 games at home against Missouri (5-7 in 2012) and Louisiana-Lafayette (9-4 in 2012). They won both games by 7 points but managed to increase their ranking to #7 somehow. Be assured that Ohio State SURELY would have lost spots after consecutive 7 point home wins over Missouri and LA-Lafayette in 2012.

Even though the AP announced that they would rank the Buckeyes in 2012 and also announced that the Buckeyes would be eligible for the AP title, the voters did everything possible to keep the SEC ranked high and keep Ohio State out of the picture. Consider that the AP had Ohio State (the only unbeaten team in the country) at #3 in their final poll and 5 of the top 9 spots in the AP poll of 2012 were held by SEC teams.

It is a sham...nothing has changed...and it won't, either, especially after Ohio State marches into East Lansing and rips out Sparty's heart. Time will tell...and I think that we have seen the time that the Buckeyes played their worst game of 2014. Some power running is all that is really missing from the offense (and some better OL play which WILL happen as it usually does with newer Buckeye OL's) and the defense played a lot better than they are being given credit for. Through all of Navy's misdirection, "re-misdirection" and sucking of the time of possession (which is the strength of their offense), they still scored just 17 points. These Buckeyes can be for real and all of the pieces are there, regardless of how hated they are (unfairly) by voters. The polls are garbage and have been manipulated because of hate for Ohio State and love for the SEC since 2007's loss to LSU in the BCS title game.

Calm rant over. Good luck, guys. Go Buckeyes. How's that for a bunch of word vomit? From now on, I'll just blog for no one to read. Stick together Nation....a long season is ahead and I can't wait.

Auburn struggling with Arkansas till good ol' Gus lifts the 1 game ban on Nick Marshall as to not get upset.  If Urban would have done what Gus Malzalhn did it would be an ESecPN article all week and he would be bashed up and down the espn circuit

+9 HS
Catch 5's picture

Except that it wasn't a 1 game suspension.  Gus only said that Marshal wouldn't start the game.  It was pretty much universally accepted that he would play at some point - most figured it would be the second half.  And it wasn't their QB that was struggling - the starter played very well in fact - it was their run defense, which was horrendous.  Once Arkansas got away from the run, the game was over.

The first half doomed Ohio State in the minds of the  voters, if it hadn't been tainted already with Braxton's injury.

I can't recall a time when a team dropped three spots by beating a team on the road (neutral site or not that was basically a home game for Navy) by 17 pts.

Ohio State gets zero credit for breaking in a frosh QB who looked better as the game went on, if this was an SEC school you can only imagine the praise said SEC coach would get for adjustments and how deep said SEC team is and how they re-load.

To be honest, I don't fault the fact Ohio State dropped in the polls, but three spots is a bit much and to have a MSU team jump Ohio State after we played what will be a tough Navy team headed for a Bowl and MSU played a D-1AA team in Jacksonville State is beyond ridiculous.

+19 HS
JohnnyKozmo's picture

I really have no idea why or where it was even labeled a "Neutral" site game.  Navy plays all of it's big home games at M & T (OSU and Army this year) or FedEx (ND this year).  The places hold more people=more tickets able to be sold=more $$$.  Everything about the game pointed to Navy being the home team (pregame festivities, coin toss, stadium music when on defense, etc.).

zeversole's picture

Not to mention how well we settled in after the first half. Everyone expected a shaky start in both the offense and the defense given that we are coming in with a new QB and O-Line as well as the defense dealing with a type of option look they don't often defend against.

I think after this weekend any doubts will be out the window. Both sides of the ball are coming back home with confidence and the D will be facing a more standard offense in V-Tech that they are used to. I think the success of the defense this weekend will only make Barrett and the rest of the offense that much more confident in their game. GO BUCKS!

The Shookster is right-on with the contradiction of dropping in the poll given our performance sans Miller versus the prediction with Miller, but I think pollsters were looking to drop us in the polls regardless. Losing Braxton provided the cover.

That being said, It's only week 1 and we have a damn good team. If we look good beating VT and get past MSU, I think we can be right were we want to be in the polls at the end of the season. Right now, winning is the only thing that matters.

I like a lot of the content Doug puts out, but his polls are so stupid.  I quit going to Cleveland.com almost exclusively because of the polls he put out last year.  You don't have to be a homer and rank OSU #1 no matter what, but you shouldn't punish teams for their schedule either.  These polls really don't matter, as many have said, but....covering the spread against a good team on the road after losing your starting quarterback for the season....we should not have dropped a single spot in the polls.

If you base your ranking on performance/quality of opponent, Georgia and Texas A&M deserves it. Now MSU beat FCS school in which their scout team should be better than JSU. Auburn struggled with Arkansas. North Carolina also struggled with an FCS school and moved up two.

Why is that?  Since preseason polls are based on assumptions and previous year's results with different teams, they should change a LOT over the first 4-6 weeks since that is when real data is becoming available.  Voters who aren't willing to change the rankings drastically this early is what causes the problems most people have with the polls.

According to Athlon, Navy had a preseason ranking of #57, while WVU had a #67 ranking. I tried to find the AP preseason rankings for each team...but had no success.

However, in the preseason AP poll Navy received 2 votes to be in the top 25, WVU had 0 votes. This week, Navy received 0 and WVU received 7.

In the preseason AP poll Alabama had 1,361 votes. After beating an unranked team by 10 points they gained 12 additional votes.

OSU vs Navy line in July was OSU -13.5...we win by 17 with a new QB and we drop 3 spots.

+2 HS
OldColumbusTown's picture

But what will they do when WVU finishes 5-4 in the Big 12?  One really good thing about the selection committee is they will have to give feedback on their rankings.  As the season goes on, and WVU or Ok State begin to tail off with middling records (if it happens), it will become apparent that Bama and FSU would have two non-conference wins that do not mean as much.  IF Navy upsets ND and/or goes 9-3 this season, OSU will/should rightfully get a bump for that.

At this point, Ohio State just needs MSU to beat Oregon, Michigan to beat ND, the B1G to keep winning non-conference games, and OSU opponents to keep winning games after losing to the Buckeyes.  Whether we like it or not, OSU is not going to get the benefit of the doubt.  They're going to have it earn it on the field, and then let everything else sort itself out.

That's exactly how I & many others (I imagine) feel. 8 is probably fair, but not as it relates to the teams you just mentioned. Also, Bassdropper makes some great points above with the numbers he provided. This was likely something that was going to happen (OSU dropping) after Braxton got hurt, but it is still odd that Bama & FSU didn't move after pretty close calls with unranked teams. Funny thing is, watching TV all weekend after the game, I heard loads of people (talking head types) saying OSU has serious concerns. I heard little regarding concerns over Bama, and only slightly more regarding FSU. Not a big conspiracy guy, but it is all a bit strange. Oh well. Win the games & all's well.

It's not like the polls don't matter at all any more.  Members of the new selection committee will probably consider the polls when they make their choices for the final four.

It wouldn't be good if Ohio State falls much further.  After all, sitting at number five at the end of the season could be a problem.

Having said that - it is awfully early - and if the Buckeyes keep winning these things should take care of themselves.

Besides, if this team has the kind of character they appear to have, a bit of disrespect in the polls may provide a little extra psychological edge.

That Navy team has a chance to be favored in just about every other game this year. What will it take for Florida St and Alabama to drop in the polls? I mean, we all know that 2 SEC teams will be in the playoffs along with Florida St.

I get as frustrated as most people when I see the Poll like this especially after Florida St and Alabama escaped with wins. As we all know though, most teams that start off ranked #1 or #2 don't end up being #1 or #2. Ohio State just needs to take care of business and improve every week. We want to be playing our best at the end of the season. Obviously, win all of our games but be playing the best at the end, unlike last year (Mich, Mich St., Clemson)

Often the game itself is the factor--for example, NAVY certainly was fully charged and nearly flawless but for 3-5 errors the Buckeyes made them pay for.  Playing Ohio State because it was Ohio State was a major shot of juice.

Navy presented different challenges AND was a no win situation for Ohio State ( win huge or else). I would much rather start with more conventional mediocre teams like Ok State and West Virginia. +1 HS

I actually agree with you on that.  I think scheduling Navy is a poor decision.  Why expose your team to a triple option offense with little upside effect with a victory anyway.  I do think Navy could possibly beat those two, my point was simply that if our offense came out flat and only put up 6 first half points we'd probably have been down by more than one at halftime vs those other two based on what I saw.  I'm not sure our offensive line would have fared too well against Ok States defense in game 1 of the season.

AP logic - South Carolina lost bad to Texas A&M, but now that A&M is ranked 9th the loss doesn't look as bad, so we shouldn't move them that far down (or question whether they were ranked too high to begin with).

I'm actually pretty stunned that TAMU didn't jump the Bucks simply because they're a big bad SEC (Big XII) team who beat up on another big bad SEC team.

Anyone that is a Buckeye fan shouldn't be shocked by this. It is good comedy watching the talking heads fall all over themselves in their bias against the Buckeyes.

As much as I want to complain, it means nothing to me this early in the season.  These guys just need to focus on getting better as a unit, especially the OL... If that happens and Barrett can maintain his statistical efficiency, we'll have no reason to complain come December.  Hopefully the old saying that the most noticeable (weekly) improvements to a team occur from week 1 to week 2.

Who's ready to tailgate?

I ain't even mad. 8 is a fair spot for us to be in and if we keep winning we will rise in the polls. Not to mention that the playoff basically makes these rankings a giant waste of time. They have no point and are only still around as a tradition.

I think this will go a long way towards creating that "angry football team" that Urban Meyer talks about.

Good when we beat MSU they have to call it an upset and say we are a good team!!! Or they just look like the same old jackass's they always do!

And *ichigan STILL SUCKS!

Whiskey was horrid. I've seen true freshman, walk on QB's, that were 3rd on depth chart but forced into action get first start of season (Texas Tech) and look more polished than their starting passer.

Go Bucks and michigan STILL SUCKS!

We dropped b/c Braxton's news mostly. Let them drop us. Beat Sparty on the road and we will jump right back.

I was pissed off at first but you know I am fine with it now. Takes a little pressure off and we can only hope that Michigan State beats Oregon and gets ranked way up there so that we can take it away from them this year! I don't even really care if we make the CFP I just want to serve a nice cold plate of revenge to Michigan State when they've finally made it to elite status.

They hate us. Get over it. Makes it harder but SOOOO much more fun when we win.  MSU deserves to be ahead of us, but I am feeling good about this team.  Georgia is overrated though.  As usual.

With the fallout from Braxton now over this isn't so bad..Not that far to the top.. Just win, baby! Only one or two teams go undefeated each year and not that many teams with only 1 loss by the end of the year. GO BUCKS!

Week 2 message to the team.  Don't be shook.  JT, calm down, play confident like you did in the 2nd half.  Read option more, O Line:  Block for his A$$.  Use the weapons ........Samuel, Dunn, Dontre, Heurmann,(sp).. Devin, Smith, .........don't be shy ...just play with more aggressiveness than they do.  Intimidate them!  I said this last week...listen to me now..hear me later.

Hit 'em hard. Keep Hitting them.  Exude strength over opponent.

The pollsters are always hating on us, just go out and win!  With JT getting more comfortable each day and all the younger guys getting more game day experience, we're only gonna get better each week.  The pollsters can't ignore us if we just keep winning.

yeah, well, damn...it could have been worse....,It will be better by December!

We just need to keep winning and the polls will take care of themselves. Go Bucks

Going into the 2nd game of the 2002 football season we were ranked #8 in the AP poll. And a team from TSUN was ranked 1 spot ahead of us. Fun fact of the day

If dropping OSU in the polls is because our marquee player, Braxton Miller, was hurt/out for the season, then lets see how consistent voters are with Baylor this coming week. Their QB Bryce Petty suffered two broken bones in his back and is not expected to play. IF Baylor wins and they drop at least 3 spots, like OSU did after its win over Navy, then there can be no complaining by us Buckeye fans. However, if the same principle is NOT applied to Baylor, then it will be apparent that there really exists a voter bias against Ohio State.

Go Bucks!!!!

I couldn't agree more. I would even argue that Bryce is more valuable to Baylor since they really don't have as much talent nor get the kind of recruits that Ohio State does. Not taking anything away from Braxton at all.. it's just, if you took away AJ McCarron from Alabama last year, they'd still win quite a few games. If you took away Derek Carr from Fresno St. last year they may have struggled to win hardly any games.

Not overly bothered by it.   I think there are at least 7-8 teams that, based off this past weekend, look better than us.   As long as we keep winning, being in the top 10 keeps us close enough to make the playoffs.  It is unfair that 'Bama is still considered the second best team in the nation even though MANY looked better than them over the weekend.

I thought they would fall further being Braxtonless. JT is the only reason they didn't fall more.

Seeing our fans give a shit about the polls is sad. Amazing how something trivial can make a group of people so mad.

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

How did Ole Miss move up?  They struggled for almost the entire game against Boise St.  It wasn't until a few fourth quarter TDs that they pulled ahead.
