Kicker Sean Nuernberger Loses Black Stripe

By DJ Byrnes on August 23, 2014 at 12:27p

Sean Nuernberger, a freshman kicker from Kentucky (but native of Germany) who is competing with fifth-year senior Kyle Clinton for the starting kicker job, lost his black stripe today, according to head coach Urban Meyer.

Here's Nuernberger describing his assets in an interview with Eleven Warriors:

"I feel when I am on I'm pretty good. Pressure doesn't get to me really, Coach Coombs was there yelling in my ear while I was kicking and it didn't get to me, so I feel that's my strong point, dealing with pressure. I've got a big leg I've been told, and I've hit 65-yard field goals before and can be pretty accurate from that distance."

If you can survive kicker-abuse from Kerry Coombs, you'll fit in just fine, Sean.

Let's put him on the big board!

I think it would be awesome if every time he ran on to the field, everyone would yell Foooooose! German translation - foot.

Fall camp has a different feel to it this year.  Maybe it's just me, but more guys seem to be losing their black stripes at a faster rate than last year, and allowing them to feel like they are a part of them team.  I think there was a guy last year who had his stripe all year long.  That's gotta suck.

I really like his style. In the spring game he looked like he was chipping the ball from every distance no problem.

Heard he earned this from Coombs after he didn't reach for the water bottle during stretching

We were born to love Ohio State and hate that team up north.

Don't mean to sound dumb.  But was does losing a black stripe mean?

They are already on the roster.  Black stripe or not, he'd play in a game if all the other kickers got injured in gameplay.

It's symbolic, like communion, it represents them becoming full members. Everyone is derecruited to deal with entitlement issues and they earn their spot on the team. I love it. The quicker they learn that nothing is given and everything is earned the better. You assume he'd play with a black stripes but we don't know. If you've seen Hoosiers you know great coaches can be hardheaded when making a point, i.e. playing only four players. Different situation but we don't need to worry about it bc Sean is a buck!

I'm surprised guys like Jamarco Jones and Marshon Lattimore have not lost their black stripes yet.

Maybe he expects so much of them they have to do more to earn it? It's the psychology at work

I would think this is an indication he's won the kicking job or at least close to it. He was bombing 50-yarders in the spring game. Reminded me of Nuge :)

I hope that a great Buckeye kicker emerges to fill the role Mike 'the nuge' Nugent left.  How many games did he win for Big Tress?  Actually I don't because I don't want to have games hinge on 3 points, with all due respect to kickers.

You already know how I feel about this. Love seeing things like this happen. Congrats!!!

So this means he is allowed to drink water at practice now, right?

For him, it's more like Breaktoberfest.

A punter from Australia and a kicker from Germany. Is Gregg Popovich coaching the special teams?

If he is as good as billed, and Johnston continues to be as good as we was last year, we should have one of the best sets of boots in the country!
