Camp Meyer 8/16/14: Grinders Get Rewarded

"Grinders get rewarded," Urban Meyer tells his team in the latest video dispatch from fall camp. "They're saying 'Dont go.' He's saying, 'I can't go.' You're fighting for playing time... go get it."

Twenty-seven seconds in, Urban calls the start to the circle drill. Typical circle drill chaos ensues.

At about a minute in, a defender tries to take out the legs of Rod Smith (who is now wearing No. 7). Smith, in a ridiculous display of athleticism, hurdles the suddenly-helpless defender.

At 1:15, Corey Smith (No. 84) makes a nice snag and shows some shiftiness while picking up some yards-after-the-catch.

At 1:20ish, Jalin Marshall(!) shows off a spin move after taking a handoff on a sweep pattern.

That hurdle, though.

He's a 5th year senior with the same size as Eddie (6'3, 235 lbs.). Of course that doesn't make him Eddie George, but you've got to love the athleticism and speed. Eddie George never had the wheels that Rod Smith has. Smith's problem was 3 or 4 fumbles in his first 50 carries as a Buckeye and finally he is emerging from the dog house. I don't think that he is necessarily prototypical for a RB in Urban Meyer's system, but neither was Carlos Hyde. The low end speed from both Hyde and Smith is what makes them work in Meyer's offense as both were capable of running in the low 4.3's when healthy.

Thanks, Urb!

Droppin' knowledge. Your posts are always so insightful CGroverL.

Neither Hyde nor Smith are touching "low 4.3s", unless you're using the Urban Meyer stopwatch that says Roby ran a 4.27 or whatever his listed time was.

I know people are always using unofficial times at college, then the to to the combine and run 4.5s.

Dmac3212's picture

Unofficial buckeye track/urban stop watch 4.3s are mid 4.5s

Dmac3212's picture

Let's just say ted gin ran at 4.28.....I can't see Hyde or Smith even close to that.

+2 HS
buck-I.8's picture

Ginn ran his lowest at 4.32 at the combine and his adjusted was 4.38. Percy Harvin clocked at 4.41.

Hyde's combine doesn't tell the whole story because he tweaked his hamstring but he probably wasn't gonna run above a 4.45, if that. Smith will put up similar numbers, likely in the 4.50 range. That's still plus speed for a RB of their sizes, but RBs just aren't putting in sub 4.4 times because of the muscle they have to have to survive the physical stress of the position. Chris Johnson ran in the 4.2s in 2008 I believe, but only those in his mold and athletes like Dri Archer will run that low as RBs.

Dmac3212's picture

Ya I agree 4.5 for big powerful back is great speed enough to break it

cw823's picture

It's not so much the hurdle, it's the Bradley Roby'ish poor tackling that bothers me.

Agreed! I don't know if many other programs around the country are providing the goods like this or not but I definitely love the look ins from the video team. Great way to satisfy the hunger.

Corey Smith does cool things with the ball in his hand.  Kid was untouchable in high school and I think some of that can translate in his (likely) two seasons at OSU.

Corey Smith is looking good.  We've needed more yards after the catch for a few seasons now.

CGroverL's picture

Perfect comment. Yards after the first contact have hurt Braxton Miller's passing numbers tremendously as when a WR catches the ball he goes down upon first contact on nearly every catch. When you look at Miller's passing yards on the year, he actually came close to throwing the ball through the air for his yardage total. I think we will have some playmakers that have been missing for a while emerge this season. Again....great comment, you beat me to it.

Thanks, Urb!

Patriot4098's picture

The WRs didn't create for themselves. They had trouble with separation before and after the catch. They rarely caught passes with room at their disposal. I'm not gonna lie; I believe some of that is coaching.

I think  that will be Raekwon's struggle in the long run as we'll. he's not the fastest guy but he can stuff the run ie. Brandon spikes. But throw hillard in there and it's a great 1 2 punch

Damn, the thing I'm seeing is that the backup QB's both seem to be getting better. I know this is a short "best of" type video, but Cardale & JT looking better & better. The battle for backup seems to be helping...

I need some help from the smart folks out there. The video won't play and says it's not compatible with my device. I'm trying to watch it on a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. I haven't had issues with any other  YouTube videos in the past.

RaeKwon all over this video. Love seeing him. Make plays and cover receivers. I think he plays sparingly against Navy, gets about 1/4 of the Virginia tech snaps, half of the Kent State snaps, then starts after the bye week against Cincinnati. He is too talented to keep off the field

We will have to see. Everyone said the same thing about Curtis Grant his freshman year. I personally that Curtis Grant will benefit from Ash's more simple defense. Regardless, I think whoever plays at MLB will have a big year.

rosenbuck's picture

I'm getting juiced watching Cardale throw that 5-6 yard out.  If he can make those passes and make good reads, he could be a scary QB in Meyer's hands.  The competition with Barrett is only going to make them both better.

You should watch the rest of the videos.  The only way Jones puts up good numbers is if they count throws caught by the opposition as catches.

-1 HS
buck-I.8's picture

Encouraged by the clip of Jeff Greene making a short catch and weathering the first tackle to tack on another chunk of hands. A sure-handed receiver of his size that won't just go down on contact can be a huge safety valve in an offense like this.
