Ohio State No. 5 in AP Preseason Poll

Ohio State checks in at No. 5 in the Associated Press' preseason top 25 poll.

Defending national champion Florida State is No. 1 followed by Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma. Here's the full list.

Michigan State is No. 8, Wisconsin is No. 14 and Nebraska is No. 22. The Buckeyes play the Spartans Nov. 8 in East Lansing under the lights. It's currently Ohio State's lone ranked opponent in 2014.

The SEC led all conferences with eight teams (Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Missouri.)

Buckle up. Football is just around the corner.

Not surprised by any of the top five considering I believe they are the only ones favored in every game this year. I think we are right where we need to be heading into the season. Ready to pounce once the chips fall.

Kinda surprised to see Wisky at number 8 considering they lost an awful lot from last years team. We need as many B1G teams in the top 25 as possible.

Agreed - I don't think you want to be too high at the start so there's not so much pressure. I think that's what brought the 2010 team down a bit - being #1 can weigh on you after a while. I don't really like preseason polls anyway - the one thing I liked about the BCS rankings is that they didn't start for several weeks after the season started.

For the love of everything holy why is ole miss in the top 25? What is the fascination with them? They are a mediocre team who will barely make a bowl game. Mizz should be higher and s.c. And Georgia both have new qbs. I hate the SEC and preseason polls. So worthless.

Ole Miss is most definitely not mediocre.  Return a lot of starters and key players.  Veteran QB.  Laquon Treadwell.  Some all-American caliber defenders.  Are they going to win the SEC? No, but they are still a solid team that should continue to improve with experience.  I was very impressed with how Freeze has turned the program around from where they were a few seasons ago.

espn already has a large deal with the sec; i'm assuming that they have one with the AP writers as well now.

They rank most of the u of sec these days because many of the idiots that write and probably many others actually believe the worst team in the u of sec can run the table in any other conference. I heard that many of these AP guys don't even watch the games or know much about the teams.

Ole Misses beating an 8-5 Texas team is not impressive. What kind of fan hypes up beating and/ or having an 8 win team. You don't hear Texas fans hyping up their 8 win '12 team that went to Oxford and beat a 7-6 Ole Misses team 66-31.

And then I told her...i'm no weatherman, but tonight's forecast is calling for several inches!

+2 HS

You're right. There aren't many glaring omissions. But I would replace them with Marshall. or duke maybe both who over performed last year and will probably do pretty well again this year. Heck, I would even put Blue Mountain State ahead of them. Who doesn't love some Thad Castle? Anyway, maybe I'm just really biased against the SEC.

Nine starters back on defense including Cody Prewitt - 1st Team All American - A senior QB who ranks second in school history in passing yards and no SEC QB has started more games. (S.I. 14-Aug-2014)

That is my best "Official" guess.

More than likely putting Ole Miss at 18 to start things off will help get them in the top 15 by week 5 when they will play Alabama - most likely undefeated. That should help Bama as well when they beat them.

Ole Miss didn't finish in the top 25 yet are ranked 18 in preseason, plus their 2013 record Vs. Top 25 teams was 1-3.

If your going to have a top 25 poll then you gotta find 25 teams. Personally I wouldn't have a 25 team pre-season poll, 10 or 15 would do it.

Good news, none of these silly pre-season polls will or shouldn't matter this year moving forward.

Let's explore that notion, shall we?  Notable teams that SEC teams are playing this year include:  W Va, Tx Tech, K St, FSU, Clemson (x2), Ga Tech, Louisville, Wisconsin, Boise St, UCF, Indiana, and Oklahoma.

Now, compare that to the Big 10:  Washington, Iowa St, Pitt, TCU, Miami, Cal, Notre Dame (x3), LSU, Missouri, W Va, Syracuse, Utah, Oregon, Va Tech, Cincy, and Washington St.

Admittedly, the B10 has more (18) notable games compared to the SEC (13), but how many of these are good teams?  Looking at this poll, the B10 has 7 games against ranked opponents (ND counts as 3 of these) and the SEC has 6 games (clemson twice) - though they do just miss out with UCF.  For starters, the SEC plays two teams (FSU and OK) ranked higher than the highest ranked B10 opponent (Oregon).  But how about the rest of them?  To make things fair, let's count UCF at #26 to even the numbers and look at the average rankings of these opponents:  The B10 opponent's average rank is 17th, while the SEC's opponent's rank is 14th.  Extend this out to all the teams receiving votes, and you get similar results:  B10 vs #26 and SEC vs #23.

So you can say that the SEC may need to schedule more Power 5 teams - and I'm with you on that (I'm tired of too many FCS and Sun Belt teams too and the couple of teams without a notable opponent should be ashamed), but you can't say they don't play anybody.  There are plenty of challenges on their OOC schedule.

They were 7-6 last year ( one of their losses was a 55-31 beat down against East Carolina), have shown no signs of having a defense, lost their best receiver in Eric Ebron, and have a no-name QB. They're beating treated like an SEC team being so highly praised for doing little to nothing.

Bama and their new QB at #2…didn't they lose a bit on defense? I mean I know they 'reload' but come on. I think on paper, OSU has the ability to beat all of the teams ranked ahead of it, but that of course is based on the ideas that Braxton remains healthy and the defense is as good as people are predicting it to be.

+2 HS
PittBuckeye's picture

The problem with your argument is if you apply it to OSU they lost their leading receiver, their O-line, best CB, best LB, & best RB. That's ignoring the impact of losing smooth jazz, and Braxton having surgery. There are a lot of questions for all these teams every year, but the way Bama recruits you have to give them a good shot at being elite every year. Same with Ohio State, a lot of talent coming in, but it's an unknown.

The problem is as long as the SEC wins most of their OOC games and the only teams they lose to are other SEC teams, they stay ranked. Georgia last year was an example of a team that didn't belong in the rankings.

100% agree, but take a look at some of their OCC schedules. Take Alabama's this year West Virgina- neutral site, FAU, Southern Miss, and Western Carolina. That is not a tough OCC and ESPN won't say a word.

+4 HS
PittBuckeye's picture

Well of course they won't they're too busy pulling every last penny they can out of that conference. There are a couple of tough games for a few of them here and there, but even a loss will be chalked up to an early season struggle while the team was finding itself. It's painful, but as long as OSU goes undefeated they can't keep them out of the playoff.

Some of you guys have sour grapes when it comes to the SEC stuff. There are a lot of really good teams in that conference and in the PAC-12 for that matter that are going to lose 3-4 games due to the schedule they play alone. Given that OU is rated ahead of both us and MSU, I'm not too sure about that. In regards to the Big 12, Baylor, Oklahoma State and OU could have held their own against most, or all teams in the country last season (with K-State to a lesser degree). What separates the PAC 12 from the B1G is that their second tier, (Arizona, Washington, Arizona State, UCLA) are all top legit top 25 teams, so they aren't really second tier teams at all. Add in the big boys (Oregon, Stanford, USC), and that's the type of depth that the B1G isn't even close to matching. Same with the SEC.

You are aware there would be no 4 team play off it the criteia said 4 conference champions would make the playoff. The SEC let it be known that they would REFUSE to OK the 4 team playoff unless the criteria allowed two schools from the same conference make the 4 team playoff.

Hate is a strong word.  I hate ESecPN almost as much as I hate the whole SEC conference which is a close second to TTUN.
