Darius Slade is Third Freshman to Lose Black Stripe

By DJ Byrnes on August 11, 2014 at 12:10p

After Raekwon McMillan and Curtis Samuel shed their black stripes yesterday, Urban Meyer honored Darius Slade with the same honor today.

Slade, a New Jersey product, was originally committed to Nebraska before switching to Michigan State. On signing day, however, Slade shocked the public when he announced he wouldn't be signing with the Spartans.

Citing a deep bond with new defensive line coach Larry Johnson Sr., Slade pulled the trigger on signing with Ohio State without even visiting the campus.

This was an awesome guy to get, snatched him straight from Sparty. Doesn't get any better than that

I can't wait to poop in the PL bathroom.

Unless we snatch one from Fat Joke... But lately, is the scUM talent really that great?

What's round on the ends and high in the middle? Tell me if you know!

How to go, Darius! You're helping make your unit a disruptive force.

Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !

If you can't win your conference, just quietly accept your non-playoff bowl game.

Darius Slade just sounds like a bad ass name.

A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Great to see that he is doing all the right things to deserve this honor. I had JD predicted as the next to have the black stripe removed, but this is awesome!

Not surprised at all. This kid has all the tools to be a superstar...dont let his ranking fool you.

I notice to be giving you a to of +1's lately. "Don't let his ranking fool you"........DAMN RIGHT!!! Rankings mean absolutely zero. Putting in the work and showing the results of that work are what counts. Just ask former 3-star recruits AJ Hawk and James Laurinaitis how well their careers in Columbus were and now in the NFL are. Work pays off....this kid had the goods and Coach Mick did the best he could with him. In my opinion, that is lie a+b+c= Silver Bullet.....that is if a equals "having the goods", b equals working hard, and c equals Coach Marotti. We have the Silver Bullets out there, we just need to get the coaches to get them to mesh as a solid immovable force. All of this has a high probability of success...The Silver Bullets are back though...I BELIEVE!!!!

The Playoff Chase Is On. The Buckeyes are just waiting for the season to start. Let's stay healthy and have our players get what belongs to The Ohio State University.

"I hope they're last in everything". One of Meyer's comments when speaking of TTUN after being hired at Ohio State.

I think this speaks volumes for the trust Urban has in Larry Johnson and eye for talent that Larry has! From what I recollect Urban extended a scholarship to Slade based only on Johnson's word!

My favorite 80s action movie star!

In a world, where black stripes are the norm and complacency is a way of life, . . . one man stands against the tide of adequacy. He is Darius Slade! Coming this fall, blitzing his way to a movie theater football stadium near your.

Kid is a stud. IMO he would have lost his stripe with or maybe even before Curtis and Kwon had he been an early enrollee. Congrats Slade!!

I believe having these freshman move so quickly isn't so much a reflection on their talent - they all have talent or they wouldn't be on the team - but more a reflection on their hunger. And THAT is a direct reflection on the coaching and the coaches ability to cultivate the desire that is in all football players into something very special. It seems UFMs culture and attitude are starting to take root. Hold on boys, this is gonna be fun!

Woody always said "You Win With People".  That speaks volumes for both Coach Johnson and Darius Slade.  It is truly a testament of young man's faith and trust in his future position coach to commit to Ohio State sight unseen.  Amazing.  That he is one of the first Freshmen to remove his black stripe speaks volumes about the quality of both individuals.

Well done Darius!  Keep up the good work.

anyone have a story as to "why" each had their stripe removed? a particular play in practice?

Rather surprising really. All the talk on him was that he wasn't going to play this year. Maybe this changes that. Either way. Congrats to him!

Can't say I'm too surprised bc if you look at the picture of the 2014 class together his arms are massive. Kid looks like a physical freak! Congrats to darius.

Agree on this!  I think we will start seeing so much talent that our second string D-linemen could start at most other schools across the nation.
