Video: Urban Meyer's SportsCenter Appearance

By 11W Staff on July 31, 2014 at 11:28a

After making an appearance on Mike & Mike, Urban Meyer stopped by the SportsCenter set to have a discussion with his good friend Joe Tessitore.

On the new College Football championship trophy...
“I did not realize that was the trophy. There's a big part of me that's always going to remember those crystal footballs.”

On Braxton Miller's development...
“He's full-speed, ready to go. Best shape he's ever been in. His attitude is terrific. It gave us a chance to work on the two areas he needs strength: the leadership part and just the overall knowledge of how to attack defenses and keeping his eyes downfield.”

“The next step is big. He's actually on a very standard development as a quarterback. His next step – he was the Big Ten Player of the Year two years in a row, has won a ridiculous amount of games – now his next step is to go win a championship.”

On the replacing four offensive linemen...
“Four great leaders—four great energy players that brought it every day to practice, and now they're gone. We have two starters right now and we have to find three more. Spring was somewhat disappointing, but I have a lot of confidence in our line coach and have a lot of confidence in our personnel. We just got to get better.”

On spending two days with Chip Kelly and the Eagles...
“We're going to steal some of the things Coach Kelly has done with the Eagles. His attention to detail and sports performance is something I've never experienced before. So, it's a new era for the Buckeyes. We're going to do a lot of it as well.”

On emerging players...
“I don't like to use the word stars, but our safeties, Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell are two names. Youalso have this kid named Curtis Samuel out of Brooklyn, New York and he was here for the spring. He could be the real deal. And Raekwon McMillan is a highly-recruited guy and I hope holds up to what he's supposed to be.”

I think Urban will look a little less disgusted with that trophy when he's holding it up in January

I honestly think Urban goes into the SC set 2 hours early and hands his interviewer a script saying "This is what you're going to ask me, got it?"

He responds so perfectly to each question with such purpose that it has to be scripted. Think about all of the young names he brought up in that interview and what that does, not only for those individual players, but for recruiting efforts. It even motivates the older guys and generates media excitement. Sometimes I'm not so sure if he doesn't plan these interviews himself, instead of ESPN contacting him first. There is no silence in an Urban interview, every answer is calculated and concise. He understands the importance of building his own brand while still coming off as a professional, and really a businessman.

Now compare that to the babbling stupidity that is a Brady Hoke interview.

I got a gray kitty, white kitty, tabby too, and a little orange guy who puts snakes in my shoes. Got mad MC skills, that leave ya struck, and I roll with my kitties and I'm hard as f*ck.

Well he does get paid millions of dollars to do what he does.  He's a pro.  I would expect nothing less.  We do the same for our General officers - we select the very best and brightest to lead our nations military.  The need to be able to speak and conduct themselves in a highly professional manner, period.

A lot of those questions were asked during the B1G media bonanza that he just wrapped up, so I'm sure he was quite ready for any question ESPiN had for him

So give him the ball on 4th and short.

And when we win the game, we'll buy a keg of boooooooooze!! And we'll drink to old Ohio 'till we wobble in our shoes.

That trophy is atrocious. Does not have any need to be so huge! It will not be the same as holding the crystal ball by any means.

I wouldn't mind it so much if the base wasn't so damn big. I'm not entirely sure what they were going for.

Tried too hard to be groundbreaking in comparison to other major sporting trophies. The more simple, the better. Ex: Lombardi Trophy, crystal ball, Larry O'Brien Trophy, Stanley Cup, all are very iconic and all are much simpler designs.

Thought the comments about keeping an eye on Miller for the first two weeks was interesting.  Also noticed some high praise for Curtis Samuel.

Go Bucks!

Is it just me, or is he constantly motivating players by calling them out as guys who "have to get better," who "could be the real deal" and who need to hold "up to what he's supposed to be"? I like that he doesn't give them a star treatment. Good job Coach.

Enough with the Hyde and 4th and short.  We stayed with Clemson;  we would not have stayed with Florida State.  We were at no point ready for the NC last year.

Braxton/Hyde>>Nick Marshall/Tre Mason. They were able to push FSU to the limit.

FSU's passing attack vs. our pass defense was the matchup I was worried about.  But I agree with the premise that we were still a very good team that could compete with anyone.  FSU wasn't some unbeatable team despite lots of talent.

We lost to Clemson.  FSU beat Clemson 51-14.  I feel like that information should be considered.  FSU was bigger and faster than Clemson.  it would have been a bloodbath.

Buckeyevstheworld's picture

By that logic, Ohio State should have lost to Oregon a few year back. USC beat Ohio State, and Oregon stomped USC 47-20.
