Alabama Transfer Chad Lindsay Has Chosen Ohio State

Ohio State's quest to rebuild an offensive line that lost four starters received a major boost this afternoon, as former Alabama center Chad Lindsay has chosen to sign with the Buckeyes, according to CBS Sports' Jeremy Fowler.

Lindsay started four games for the Crimson Tide last season and is a former three-star recruit from Woodlands, Texas. He has already graduated from Alabama and will be eligible to play immediately.

Lindsay visited Ohio State, Michigan, Cal, Louisville and Oklahoma.

So far this spring, Pat Elflein (right guard) and Taylor Decker (left tackle) are the only two players to nail down starting jobs on the offensive line. The 6-foot-2, 302-pound Lindsay becomes the front-runner to replace departed center Corey Linsley. Jacoby Boren and Billy Price split first-team reps during the spring.

Boren as the backup center, move Billy Price to guard, where he doesn't need to worry about snapping the ball, then you just need to figure out who plays right tackle, probably Baldwin. That's a solid o-line to me.

Yeah; speaking just for myself, I thought Nussmeier gave us the major inside track with a Lindsay transfer.  I am as surprised as I am disappointed.  Can't sugar-coat this one.  We wanted this guy and frankly we needed this guy.  Big, big win for OSU.

So now can I ask if perhaps Jacoby Boren might want to transfer to Michigan?  Family values have deteriorated badly at OSU.

Yeah I forgot the sarcasm font.  But I don't like the sarcasm font all that much.  Too obvious.

Anyway, you probably knew the inside joke.  "Deterioration of family values."  Did anybody promise Mike Boren that Jacoby would get a starting job if Mike got Justin and Zach to go to OSU?

(Incidentally, I wrote to Rob Oller about that column and I told him he had the Boren story significantly wrong.  I told him what I thought.  Rob was very polite.  But he said that he couldn't find anyone who'd confirm my differing take on the events.  John U. Bacon's book later proved me right.)

Probably a stupid question but just out of curiosity, how is some eligible to play after having graduated college? Does that mean he will have to take classes at Ohio State? How does this work? I'm glad he's here by the way. The more experience the better!

+1 HS
Zimmy07's picture

He will have to take graduate level classes at OSU.  If he redshirted as a freshman he would still have 1 year of eligibility.  I think Russell Wilson did the same thing at Wisconsin.

+1 HS
Catch 5's picture

They have 5 years to play 4.  If a player graduates in with eligibility left, he can pursue his graduate degree still under scholarship.

In this case, when a player transfers after graduating, he is eligible right away (without having to sit out the usual year) if the new school has a graduate program that is not offered at his former school.

In Urban We Trust

NW Buckeye's picture

Once a player graduates with an undergraduate degree and has eligibility remaining that player may then transfer to another school for graduate studies and continue playing immediately at the new school.   The rule also stipulates that they must pursue an area of study that is not offered at their previous school.  Many athletes have done this, the most recent big name to do this was Russell Wilson at Wisky - played immediately without sitting out a year.

I like Kelley (Alabama's returning center) but IMO, Lindsay was better when he got in the game.  He was better against the pass rush and run blocking.  They were close but I thought he was better.  Kelley probably has a higher ceiling in the coach's eyes is why I think he got the start.  As a bonus, I think he was recruited initially as a guard so he could play there if needed - though it seems that center is where he is heading from your comments.

Congrats on a good pick up and I hope he earns the starting position and plays well.

kholmes's picture

Regardless of what your view of the state of the UM team is, there is no disputing that at least the fanbase on that board is a dumpster fire right now. Personally I think the program is improving and OK..but the fanbase is awful right now as the complaining about Borges and the offense last year has permanently turned Mgoblog into an unreadable mess. I think half the fans there are openly rooting for the stands to be empty and the OL to be awful just so they can say "i told you so".

As for Lindsay, given that he has only 1 year you cant be too surprised about it. Clearly he is only going to transfer to a place where he is very confident he will start right away. Both schools give him that opportunity given the poor OL play at Michigan last year and the new openings this year on the OSU line. Given he is from Alabama, he probably also wants to play for a championship again this year. Obviously it would be impossible to argue that Michigan would give him a better chance for that next year so the end decision not totally surprising given he only has one year.

+10 HS
GlueFingers Lavelli's picture

I don't think Michigan is in that bad of shape. I don't think it's far fetched for them to go into The Game in position to win the division. I think they will be much better off. My only question is Gardner. I honestly think that offense would be best served by Shane Morris. Gardner is too inconsistent and is turnover prone. With Nuss I think the lineplay is much better along with the run game, I can see Morris being more responsible with the ball. JMO of course.

Dustin Fox was our leading tackler as a corner.... because his guy always caught the ball.

+2 HS
jaxbuckeye's picture

I just don't see the point in starting Gardner over Morris other than out of loyalty. Those are snaps that Morris really needs. If they are being honest, that is not a team that is going to compete for a championship next year. They would be far better served getting Morris time with the line and receivers than giving Gardner the job. Move him to receiver where he might actually excel and have a future in the NFL.

On second thought, keep Gardner as QB.  (:

+2 HS
kholmes's picture

I just dont get the argument to start Morris. I know Gardner made a bunch of bad decisions early in the year but he ended up having a good year and most people are really surprised by his stats. 2960 passing yards, 60% completion percentage, 21 Td passes, 11 rushing touchdowns last year. I know he had interception problems early in the year but he threw only one interception over the last 6 games.

Im not saying Gardner is the greatest QB by any means..but have you ever heard of a returning QB with those stats above being replaced by an unproven QB that only played for about 10 snaps outside of the bowl game? I just dont see the case for Morris to start.

Great pickup for the Buckeyes! My question is what makes him the front runner for the starting job already??? He only started 4 college games and was just a 3 star recruit. Hes been around a winning program for a few years but minimal gameday action (like the rest of our linemen).I think he adds great depth and more competition to an already heated battle that is becoming a dog fight along the Oline. 3-star?  Where did you get your info?  Everywhere I read, says a 4-star.  And that was coming out of high school.  Check out his BIO:

Chad Lindsay came to the Capstone as one of the top interior offensive line prospects in the nation ... a January 2010 enrollee ... second-team EA Sports All-American ... the top offensive guard prospect in the nation according to ESPNU ... ranked 74th in the ESPNU 150 ... also listed as the No. 15 guard by Scout.com and the No. 41 offensive lineman by Rivals.com ... an athletic offensive lineman with solid fundamentals and good technique ... played in the ESPN Under Armour All-America Game ... ranked as the No. 42 prospect in Texas by Superprep Magazine ... a PrepStar Dream All-American

Minimal gameday action?  Again...where are you getting this?  This below doesn't even mention last year where he started 4 games. So 'minimal' gameday action is a bit of a stretch...

2012 (SOPHOMORE): Came off the bench in 10 games ... saw action against Michigan, Western Kentucky, Arkansas, Florida Atlantic, Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Western Carolina, Auburn and Notre Dame.

2011 (REDSHIRT FRESHMAN): Lindsay played in two games as a reserve offensive lineman ... saw action vs. Kent State in the season opener and against Tennessee.

So Please for the sake of 11W start reading the article before spouting off in the comments. BTW 4 starts and some mop up duty is minimal gameday action. What would you characterize 4 starts and some mop up duty as?? Would you call him an experienced veteran? Lol so please tell me where are you getting your information?!?

WOW!  Nice get here with a center.  I would think that both Billy Price and Jacoby Boren can slide over to play another position, if they can beat out the other competition.   I personally love Price - looks and plays like a big, mean lineman.  I also would like to see Boren beat out someone to play, and keep up the Boren legacy.  I loved his brother, Zac!  That was a great football player, and one of my top 10 Buckeyes.

You can take the man out of Ohio, but you cannot take the Ohio out of the man. Go Bucks!!

Anytime you can add a potential starter on a severely depleted line is a huge win! Even if he doesn't end up starting, depth is always a plus. Not to mention this will just add to the competition for the position.

Welcome to tOSU Chad! I hope you have lots of success on the field and in the classroom.
