ESPN: Block O Second Best Student Section in the Big Ten

Folks, Ohio State's student section has been dissed in arbitrary rankings in an ESPN article. Time to fire up the ol' internet rage machine!!!!!11

After calling Penn State students the best student-fans in the country, here's what they said about the Block O:

The Buckeyes have such a wide swath of supporters in Ohio that they can sometimes feel like a pro team, but the large and dedicated student section at the Horseshoe keeps that from being the case. Occupying much of the south end zone, the Block-O often leads the stadium in cheers. Urban Meyer started a new tradition where he and strength coach Mickey Marotti lead the students through a series of "quick cals" before the game. And win or lose, the team sings "Carmen Ohio" in front of the band and student section after games.

Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa are the next on the list. Neither school in Michigan made the cut, much to our delight, which softens the blow of not holding down the No. 1 spot.

I have quite a few gripes about Block O at football games, but it's good seeing them so high up on this list. I will say that I've always had a lot more fun sitting in normal student seats than I did in the few games I spent in Block O South.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

I always saw Block O as extra cheerleaders in the stands.  I never sat there and preferred to just watch the game and yell/cheer.

Well, quite frankly, Penn State's student section is better than ours.

Well, of course, it's easier to chant in unison when you're essentially one collective cult.

Unfortunately there is no footage available of those students throwing bags of urine at TBDBITL in '05.

Honestly,  what does this have to do with the article?  A frat house abusing fans while they walk by. And one of the students who threw the beer was a Pittsburgh student.

Look closely, because the closer you think you are, the less you will actually see.

Ugh, really?

Is it the white T-Shirts?

Or the fact that Penn State didn't host Ohio State last year?

Maybe ESPN is throwing Penn State a bone.

I believe the SEC players put their pants on one leg at a time like we do.

We got tbdbitl,  the best coach and coach staff, the best overall fan base so if we don't have the best student section it's okay....it won't be long for us to be the best at that as well.  Just my opinion of course!

Ohio State fans just don't have that SEC speed, and the other fans in the conference are really bad. Who would want to go root for a team up in the cold anyway? Sure they pack over 100,000 at home and travel better than any other college out there but that's just because of their weak schedule. This is why Baylor, Stanford and Northern Illinois fans deserve to jump them in the rankings this week. Ohio State fans would go 6-6 in the SEC. - ESPN

Of course we can always believe ESPN right? Now when it comes to  TBDBITL THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY can't be beat or out performed!

Step aside Nick, Urban is the real rock star!

"Stop. Never will those jokes ever be humorous or appropriate."

That's just your opinion. I can't stand when people get on their high horse, like you're doing, and act like the joke was about kids being molested. No, his joke wasn't about that....it was making fun of the phonies at Penn State. Sheesh, are we not allowed to make fun of these "holier than thou art" PSU people? They were raking us over the coals for the over-inflated "Tat-Gate".

Get over yourself, man. It's entirely appropriate to ridicule the Pennsylvania State University --- they deserve it.

p.s. to all who run to PSU's defense in the name of "we need them to be strong to have a strong B1G", etc., etc.. Screw that mentality. I don't like the B1G enough to want to support PSU. F em.

It has nothing to do with Penn State. It has to do with respect for the victims. Nothing about that situation is funny or a joke, nor will it ever be. There were no victims in Tatgate, hence why I'd say jokes are fair(er) game. I'm sorry, but people who get any kind of humor over Penn State "pedophile" jokes need to seriously re-evaluate themselves. Because anytime I hear a joke like that, the horrific image of those kids' lives being ruined by that horrible man comes to my mind. I just don't see how you could laugh at that, whether "the intent is to make fun of the people at Penn State" or not.

Did I say it was funny? No, I didn't. Quit putting words in my mouth. I was stating a fact, not implying anything at all. I have been in the military for 5 years and have been to more countrys than I can count. I have seen and been through shit you can never ever imagine, ok. Excuse me for not being like you. Sorry If I was trained to block those sick images out of my head. I was not meaning to offend anyone.

As a member of Block O, I can speak out on a few things that would lead to this ranking:

Some of you guys may not know this, but we have emails that we send if we want to come to setup for games, which on noon games would mean we'd be at the stadium at 8 AM and we have 2 hours to finish body painting and setting out cards before the gates open to the other fans. Students that do this get preferential seating in the Block.

Students that set up cards in North block get the opportunity to shake hands with the players and coaches when they come on to the field, and if you ever have an opportunity to be in the 'Shoe when the team walks across the field to Rob Dougan's "Clubbed to Death", you have to do it.

We have 2 different card stunts on each end of the stadium. The South card stunt is a bit more serious and traditional. The North card stunt is usually something different like a Batman logo or a Minion from Despicable Me.

Surprise! Just about every one of us hates Seven Nation Army. We think it's a bit overplayed this year as we hear it when the team runs on the field and before kickoffs and some other points.

A lot of us didn't like that the University keeps attempting to put a filter on what we say during games, and while a few of us don't like it, we all understand we have to control what's actually being said and it can take fun out of some situations.

Some people, particularly in the home finale, like to throw cards everywhere not knowing that we still need those for the spring game and next season. This can also take fun out of some games.

Quite honestly, we get less inclined to cheer during blowouts when the Bucks are on defense. We still cheer when plays are made, though.

If Kenny G was our starting quarterback for the entire season, there's no doubt in my mind we would've been #1

I still find being in Block O really awesome.

I know a lot of people are tired of seven nation army but personally, I say it should stay until we replace it with something else.  As overplayed as the song is, it still gets people involved in the game.

Dear Nova,

Please buy 30,000 vuvuzelas and have Block-O toot on those the entire time the other team has the ball.

We will surpass PSU for sure.  Guaranteed.

Can you pass along to someone in the football office to have the team bring back "The Hive"? If Urban and Mick want their quick cals that's fine, but they took away something awesome as well.

I did Block O as a freshman but not after that. I appreciate that some people really liked it, but I hated that when something big was happening on the field I had people yelling at me to hold up a sign or something. I just felt like, "I want to watch the game, not have a job."It's good for some, but not for me.

You also could have added that once you get junior+ class rank you get better seats that aren't nosebleed reducing the benefit of Block O.

We need to put the student section on the away sideline. Also, having fans that are louder would help the whole atmosphere. It seems to get quieter each season in the Shoe. Hope we can fix it. Sometimes I wish Urban would call out our fans to get people to get fired up and yell. I've never understood the quiet fans. Making noise is the only way you can actually help your team on the field to give them an advantage, why would you not at least do that. To me it's a part of the responsibility that comes with buying a ticket.   Sorry about the rant.

I think the first 10 rows of all AA sections should be students. This would be a lot better for being loud and also a better atmosphere than having them all (mostly) in the south stands.

FWIW, I was impressed that our fans beat out Wisconsin. When I went to a game there (back in the 90s) that was one loud and raucous stadium.

I guess being piss-throwing, belligerent assholes make you a great student section.  Take notes, guys, take notes.

Student section or not, the butts in the seats especially our elder wealthy alumnus need to quit sitting on their hands throughout the game.  I was quite irritated on my last visit to the 'Shoe as I looked around during key plays and observed many fans oblivious as to what potential they have as group.  Imagine what 106,000 would sound like if all were cheering at once.  I'll get off my soapbox just my 2 cents.

It's not just home games. I was the the Northwestern game this year and we had plenty of those people their. If you don't care about the game, stay in Chicago.

I wasn't born a Buckeye but I became one as fast as I could.

GlueFingers Lavelli's picture

I think about that a lot. Imagine if we screened over 100k fans. Yelling contest for your ticket. I can't imagine how loud any stadium could be if you packed it full of hardcore fans. Would be a special environment for sure.

TCOB_6's picture

I couldn't agree more about "Student section or not, the butts in the seats especially our elder wealthy alumnus need to quit sitting on their hands throughout the game". I have been disappointed on several of my trips on game day at how quiet our fans can be. In my opinion, if you just want to watch the game, stay home. There's better coverage and you can see better. If you want to be a part of the game and atmosphere, go to the game and support the team. People that go to the games need to participate and get behind the team.
