Buckeyes offer Florida QB Dwayne Lawson

What a difference a year makes. This time last year Ohio State was really only pursuing Clemson QB commit Deshaun Watson, two days ago they offered their seventh quarterback for the 2015 class - Dwayne Lawson of Tampa, Florida.

Lawson is a 4-star and is ranked as the 12th-best pro-style quarterback nationally in the 247Composite. While he is listed as a pro-style quarterback, Lawson told 11W "I wouldn't underestimate my ability to run."

Lawson says that Ohio State plans to use him in the same offense as Braxton Miller, an offense Lawson says fits him well.

In fact, Lawson fits the mold of what Urban Meyer is looking for quite well. He throws well from the pocket but is athletic enough to run effectively as well. He certainly looks to throw first, but has great escapability. He has a huge arm and is also quite accurate.

Lawson is a relatively new target for Ohio State, as he said they have been in contact for about two weeks now. On Tuesday, Coach Warinner informed him that he was being offered a scholarship.

Lawson called the offer from Ohio State "big time" and that the Buckeyes are "definitely one of [his] top teams." He had recently named a top three of Florida, Tennessee and UCF but after offering, Ohio State is immediately in his top group of schools too. Of his top schools, Florida is the only one who has yet to offer but Lawson recently attended Florida's junior day.

Naturally, being from Florida Dwayne is pretty familiar with Urban Meyer: "he's a great coach and I know what he can do for a program," Lawson said.

Lawson said he plans to visit Ohio State "soon" and I imagine he will likely camp at Ohio State as well, given his high interest in the Buckeyes and the coaching staff's standard procedure of watching their quarterback targets throw in person.

On the site we've discussed quite a bit about Ohio State's quarterback options - they sit in a good position for Torrance Gibson and Brandon Wimbush, and seem to want to take two quarterbacks in this class. 11W asked Lawson about whether another quarterback committing to Ohio State would impact his decision, to which he responded: "we'll have to see what situation fits me best."

Regardless, Lawson is very interested in Ohio State and is a talented quarterback prospect with a high ceiling. Check out his highlights:

hey birm what qb do you think will commit first??

O-H!

I think Gibson, Wimbush and Jarrett Stidham are in their own class in the staff's mind, so I would imagine they want to see what those guys decide before accepting any other commitments.

On the flip side, I've been thinking about how the staff would want to handle this idea of taking 2 QBs. If they took a lower-ranked QB first I don't think it would deter Gibson (or whomever) from committing but if it was the other way around (Gibson commits first) it probably deters other QBs so that could be the way they are thinking.

Unlike other positions, taking multiple quarterbacks is really tough and while I've always heard the staff wants 2 qbs, I've never really thought it was a viable option but we'll have to wait and see

Looks like a pretty decent ball slinger. Hopefully Meyer can land one or two of these guys. Would like to know what Meyer's thoughts are as far as QB recruiting. Does he want to take 2 this year because he doesn't have a lot of confidence in the lineup we currently have and wants to double up in '15, or is he thinking if he lands 2 this year it won't be a high priority in '16 knowing that he has 1 in '17 already?

Solid. Just curious, if he indeed does become the first QB commit, how does that affect the T. Gibson recruitment? (Obviously he is the crown jewel) Probably a little early to tell?

Just a guess here, but I'd imagine if that would negatively impact Gibson's recruitment that they wouldn't do it.

If Gibson commits I think we take a high risk high reward player as the second QB in this class. If Gibson is as good as advertised we can move QB#2 to an alternate position or vice versa if "project #2 QB" ends up being the real deal and develops well ala Troy Smith then Gibson moves to wideout where some feel that would be his best position anyway.

Is it me, or do those highlights feature a lot of standing at the line of scrimmage? LOL. Very much in the Troy Smith/Tajh Boyd mold with a bit of a push release in his throwing motion (which isn't the end of the world) and some pretty nimble feet. Mostly, just smart recruiting. I love Collier, but can't help but wonder if the staff would have gone after more QBs this past year instead of zeroing in on Watson?

I wonder the same thing. I also like Collier, but wonder if they had not zeroed in on Watson if they wouldnt have got Drew Barker?

I really liked Kyle Allen and I think they could have gotten him if they would have recruited him harder and earlier

Sorry guys, have no idea how I could've reposted 5 times.  Guess I really hated missing out on Allen.

I don't like his delivery either.  He reminds me of TP with the way he runs throws.  Only in comparison here, but I really like Gibson more.  More of polished passer at this point.  I wasn't too impressed with the competition Lawson was playing against in the films much either.

I was thinking the same. Like Pryor, it seems Lawson short arms his passes and has deceptive speed.

Is it just me or does it feel like Urban is trying to move back towards his Utah style of offense?  Alex Smith was very efficient throwing the ball and was athletic enough to run when needed.  This kid sounds like he fits that mold.  Obviously Gibson is a little more athletic and not really the Alex Smith type but I feel Urban is gravitating back that way.  JT Barrett sounds like he fits the Utah style.  He is a more polished passer and can run when needed.  I'm excited about what the future holds for our offense.

It does seem like we are going after the pass first run second type QBs.  Not nessesarily a deliberate choice in that QBs as elusive as Braxton only come around once every few years.

Great skills his recruitment will be an interesting one to watch.

Urban and Florida woohoo!

Gibson's video is unbelievable. I would think if they land him the plan is to start him immediately. He does not look like he needs development. With that said, would they even get a 2nd QB if they signed him?

I think they take two due to allowing so many preferred walk ons at QB as well.  The staff (IMO) aren't putting all faith into Braxton's backups only because of lack of playing time as well as being unproven in action.  I personally think they'll take one lower ranked QB and Gibson.  I'd love to see Lawson on board, but with his size and ceiling, I'd say he stays close to home (FL, Miami or FSU).

7 QBs offers, that has to be the highest in recent memory right?

Definitely a pass 1st qb. Agree that he reminds me of TP. His athletic ability could work really well in UFM offense. Nice arm
