Ben Edwards Is Number Three

Ohio State went back to Florida today for the second 2015 commitment from the Sunshine State, adding Jacksonville senior-to-be Ben Edwards.

Edwards, a hard-hitting and "mean" safety with offers from Notre Dame, Auburn, Stanford and more among his near 30 offers, visited Ohio State last summer with his Trinity Christian teammates Jeff Holland and Isaiah Ford and that visit combined with the recent offer from the Buckeyes was enough to convince Edwards that Ohio State was the right place for him.

"I just decided today," Edwards said of the timing. "Ohio State was where I want to be. The coaching staff was very excited when I told them."

The Ben Edwards File

  • Size: 6-0/196
  • Pos: Safety
  • School: Trinity Christian (Jacksonville, Fla.)
  • Composite Rating: ★★★
  • Composite Rank: 20 (S)

"It's a beautiful city, and football facilities are really nice," Edwards explained his  commitment further. "I love their coaching staff."

With a commitment this early, the question now becomes "Can it stick?" Edwards was scheduled to visit Auburn next weekend, and a host of other regional schools have thrown their hats into the ring recently, but Edwards says he's finished with the recruiting process; except of course for trying to recruit other great players to join him at Ohio State. Two of them, the aforementioned Holland and five-star LSU commitment Kevin Toliver, are current high school teammates of his.

"No sir," Edwards said when asked if he'll still look around. "There will be no other visits. I will be trying to get my teammates to come with me, though."

Edwards becomes Ohio State's third commitment in 2015 (and second from Florida joining Cocoa defensive back Jamel Dean.) The Buckeyes are involved heavily in the mix for a number of Florida stars and hope to make a big impact in the Sunshine State in this recruiting cycle.

BOOOOOOOOOM

Also, Kevin Tolliver (#1 overall player via 247 composite, LSU commit who wants to visit OSU) is his teammate at Trinity Christian, unless I'm mistaken.

They also have Jeffery Holland who is an OLB and the #25 recruit in 247's composite. It won't mean we're going to end up with all of them, but you have to think it helps out our chances

DJ - That's uphill sledding.  More than 60% of desktop browsing is done through IE.  I'm somewhat agnostic, but I run a software development group and downplaying the need to have IE as a functional interface for a website would be a mistake.

IE's pants-shittingly-bad-compliance with current browser standards is killing web developers since forever.

Seriously. Upgrade to Chrome, Firefox, etc. Or enjoy having a sub-standard Internet experience.

And FWIW, I just went back and tested on IE10 and am not having any issues.  My guess is you're compounding your IE problem by having an outdated IE version.  You are doubly screwing yourself.

+8 HS
IGotAWoody's picture

People keep ignoring the comments indicating that some are at WORK and do not get to choose what browser they use. Many companies continue to use IE, and IE exclusively. Which also means, they do not make the decision about whether they can use IE10 (many companies also are still using XP, which means they are stuck in IE8).

Riggins's picture

First, let me say I feel for you on the frustration office PCs create.  I've been there.  They suck.

Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014 (i.e. no more security patches). Businesses and regular consumers still using XP beyond then are going to be facing massive security breaches and vulnerability to viruses and malware.  I strongly suggest you tell the boss where you work about this if they've been living under a rock.  You may come out looking like a hero.

Beyond that....So we have a chicken-or-egg scenario.

Do companies upgrade their rigs to fit the new standards of internet technology?  Or does internet technology upgrade their abilities to the lowest common denominator of office PC setups while simultaneously holding everyone else back?

I think a lot, a lot, of companies would never upgrade their setups if you told them Windows XP and IE8 would be supported in perpetuity.  But guess what? This is America. We are the innovators. We set the standards. Keep up or unfortunately you don't get all the shinies. Technology has a life cycle. One day, it goes off to die.

I'm sure 11W has done their due diligence with Google Analytics. They can tell the exact demographics of their users filtered by operating system, browser, and mobile vs. desktop.  If they thought upgrading the site to new standards outweighed the cost of losing however many visitors still using outdated browsers, well...it looks like they made that choice.

At this moment, IE 11 is handling this page better than Chrome 32 is for me. I realize that this is a known issue with Chrome on the new site; just sayin'.

danman9450's picture

Accommodate to 68% of the market? Forget that. As long as the site looks good, who cares about functionality!

+12 HS
Riggins's picture

That is an old graph.  IE's market share is shrinking all the time and is virtually non-existent in the exploding mobile and tablet markets.  The problem with IE isn't so much IE in general as it is that those users aren't even running the most up-to-date version of their inferior browser.

These people who can't or won't keep their browsers up-to-date are going to unfortunately be sacrificed to a sub-optimal user experience.  Not a non-functional one, but you're going to get some clipping and formatting quirks if you're sputtering along on one of these outdated browsers.  It's crazy to shackle the internet to decade-old technology.

At some point though, old browsers can't continue to be supported.  IE8 was released in 2009.  That was FIVE YEARS ago.  Internet years are even greater than dog years. Five years is an eternity in web development. I don't think its asking a lot to have people update their browser more often than a redshirt senior's overall time on campus.

+6 HS
IGotAWoody's picture

Again, see above comment. Also, your chart demonstrates that a minority of IE users are using IE10 or 11.

There's no way that graph is even remotely recent.  2008 or so.  Has to be.  Firefox passed IE a couple of years ago, and Chrome has to be on the verge of passing Firefox.  Virtually everybody I know uses Chrome.

And I gotta tell you, as a web developer who has lost a good chunk of his life fixing the user experience on Microsoft's DELIBERATELY FUBAR BROKEN browser, I have little to no sympathy for cries of "...but I'm stuck on IE8 at work."  Your only option should be (and will be before long) to pressure the ignorant PHB's to upgrade to a standards compliant browser.

The rising consensus is to completely fucking ignore IE compatibility issues for now on, and only target Chrome and Firefox.  IE 10/11 are finally getting close to being compliant, so usually that experience will be pretty good.  But I won't lift so much as a pinky, if I have a choice, to make something work better in IE if it already works in Chrome/Firefox.

just to add to it, i just watched the tape.

positive - Kid definitely knows how to tackle. Gotta love that. Ball Hawk, tracks very well. He knows how to read and come to the ball and obviously has speed.

negative - is it me or does he put his helmet down a lot? Looks like he was flagged a few times for some of those hits. Granted I love having a player that makes a tackle but I hope he works that out of his game because he could have flag issues in college with that.

I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!

I was thinking the same thing about lowering the helmet but I wouldn't be too concerned.  When he gets to Columbus, the staff is gonna discipline him, I'm sure.  They don't want guys on the field that are gonna be drawing flags left and right.  Especially with the new targeting rules.

Birm/Jordan or the rest of the gang.  How much do you think this affects the recruitment of Holland, Ford, or even Toliver?  All Top 380 players in the nation on one team.  Yikes.

Jordan Wagner's picture

Ford was a 2014 recruit and has signed with VT.

It's early to say with Holland and Toliver. They have both expressed interest in visiting Ohio State. Florida is in a good position for Holland and Toliver is committed to LSU, but he has mentioned he wants to visit. We'll see if he visits. Edwards' school has guys committed to LSU, Florida State, Florida, UNC and UCLA already. It doesn't appear any of their guys are sticking together at the next level.

OSU has 2 commits from Florida already. Seems like we have good chances with guys like J Patrick, T Gibson, T McFadden, Kilby-Lane, Peete, T. Martin, & Patchan.  and Meyer could pull in a few of the guys that are interested in us, but arnt as high at the moment like Tolliver, M Ivey, D James, Holland, T. Cole, G. Williams, TJ Simmons, Campbell, McCloud, K. McFadden & D. Cain. Its unbelievable how many Florida kids we are in on right now & its early in the process. Which could mean we get in on some more guys OR we lose some targets. BUT either way, I wouldnt be surprised if we land 5-8 kids from Florida.

Highlight reel reminds me of a little lankier version of Mike Doss. Boy can he bring the thunder when he hits.

This kid can bring the wood. Watch that hit at 1:06 mark or so.  WOW!  Now I'm not trying to get to ahead of myself, but some of those hits bring me back to the likes of Doss, Whitner and dare I say it...Jack.  Oh how that would be nice to see an OSU db just lighting ppl up.  Sure would put a smile on my face:-)

Some people think we’re the hunted.I don’t feel that way at all. We’re the hunter.Everybody wants an angry football team.Everybody wants a team on edge and a hungry team.If you’re a hunter, that usually equates to being hungry.

Anybody gonna talk about how Ben Edwards end the lives of at least 5 children in that highlight? He looks like Kam Chancellor out there!

Just watched the highlight video and DAMN he hits like a beast. The way he hits reminds me of Ryan Shazier.

I'm guessing the competition @ the DB positions will be insane from here on out! Urban and staff has recruited the hell out of the safeties and corners so far (just like every other position group) plus adding Ash to coach them up? Its a wrap. Honestly though, with the loss of Mitchell, LB needs to continue to be bolstered and the O-line still needs to reach stockpile status. Other than that, no worries.

Welcome to Buckeye Nation Ben! This kid is an instant favorite for me. It is lofty praise, but he reminds me a bit of the Assassin. Yes he may get flagged on occasion, but he knows the violence he dispenses brings timidity and respect from opposing offenses. At 196 lbs., he easily could put on another 10 lbs. without losing his closing speed. That would be devastating!

Ben said that Ohio State was getting a hard-hitting, hard-working player. He should also add a quite intelligent player as well. I believe he has about a 4.0 GPA.

It seems to me that our secondary issues soon may be a thing of the past.

I have seen this kid play in person and hes everywhere , just seems to have a nose for the ball , he is definitely better than his 3 star rating , will be one heck of a safety for The Ohio State University , glad to have him flying around for the silver bullets !!!

It's good to be a Buckeye!!!

The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced

We need more wood-shed dudes on D, like this cat. Obviously the new era of pansy-ball limits guys who like to clean clocks, but he'll figure it out. He has that Shazier body-type, with the long arms and deceptive speed...I'll allow it.

Thank the Maker that I was born in Ohio, cradle of coaches, US Presidents, confederate-stomping Generals, and home of The Ohio State University Football Buckeyes!

Oh man, so glad he became a Buckeye. I sure don't want our offensive players to go against him in the real game. Yikes!!!!

With that said, I hope our coaches can get him to properly tackle and wrap it up every single time. It's sweet to see him separate the ball from receivers with massive hits, but there are other ways to do so (i.e. Charles Tillman's peanut punch). I see him showing good tackling techniques on some plays but other times, I found him just going for the "kill." In high school, he might be able to get away with most of those hits, however, in college, as players getting bigger and stronger, some offensive players might be able to bounce off some of those hits.

I'm sure he will also get bigger, stronger and faster but him being our last resort on D as a safety, and helmet to helmet hit resulting an automatic rejection, I want him to play with a bit more of composure. Learning that probably save him some "chump change" for him in NFL level too!

Welcome to Buckeyenation Ben!

BOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!

Love the fact we are getting Florida kids to commit early!  Hopefully we snag a few more.  As a former cross-town rival of Trinity, I can vouch for the fact that there is a TON of talent in Jacksonville.  Hopefully we keep tapping into the wealth!  Great job Coach Smith!

Way too early comparison but IMO he reminds me of a taller Antoine Winfield!!
