The top recruit in Thad Matta's prized 2014 recruiting class planned to enroll for the summer semester, but is not academically cleared by the NCAA.

According to a report by the Columbus Dispatch's Bob Baptist, D'Angelo Russell did not attend classes, earlier today, because his high school transcript has not been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Baptist indicates a source told him the clearinghouse is waiting on Russell’s score from a standardized test he took earlier this month.

“We are hoping to have him here soon,” Matta told the Dispatch.

"He's got the ability to make big-time plays with the basketball in his hands, be it three-point shots, driving and getting fouled," Matta said, after Russell signed in November. "He makes guys around him better."

Russell withdrew from the USA U18 National Trials last week in an attempt to attend classes.

Any chance this actually becomes a problem?

Because if so SON OF A UGHHHHHHHHHHH I was really looking forward to watching him suit up for the Buckeyes.

He transferred so I'm wondering if that has something to do with the delay.

FYI: Russell isn't a transfer. He's an incoming freshman.

OSU did pick up 2 transfers, graduate transfer Anthony Lee from Temple and freshman transfer Trevor Thompson from Virginia Tech.

Lol that's some funny shit right there.

I believe he meant that he transferred high schools.  Credits not aligning at high schools in different places can make it a challenge to get all of the courses you need.  But it sounds like it might have been test score related which wouldn't be impacted by a transfer between high schools.

You could be right. Hadn't thought it could be related to transferring from HS in Louisville to prep school in Florida. But if it's ACT or SAT stuff, that wouldn't matter.

Yes, I meant transferring high school but also heard today it has to do with a test score.

I really hope for the best here. Cross-fingers everyone.

This is only good news that he sees the bigger picture.

Shouldn't have spent so much time on the AAU circuit as well as his high school team missing a lot of school playing in these high profile tournaments.  It is obvious from the story what the issue is if one reads the story above.  He hasn't had a high enough score on the ACT test and had to retake it again last month hoping to get the score he needs.  Nothing to do with transferring high schools.

If it's not high enough, when can he take it again?

Can't as that one was the last for this academic year.  Next one isn't until September.

I hope this gets resolved soon. Russell is the type of scorer that the Bucks lacked last season. I know that he hasnt played a second of college ball, but I think his game will translate well. We desperately need a consistent scorer and Russell should be the man to take on that role. Great touch on the 3 ball, can drive and score and facilitates (your welcome, Steven A. Smith) like an elite point guard. Fact is, kid is a baller that we need to be successful this season. Fingers crossed...
