Mickey Mitchell, a Four-Star Forward in the Class of 2015, Decommits from Ohio State

By Mike Young on August 21, 2014 at 9:59p
107 Comments

When former Ohio State linebacker Mike Mitchell announced he was leaving the football team in January, many people speculated his brother, Mickey, wouldn't be far behind.

Much like his brother, Mickey is a freak athlete. Unlike Mike, Mickey is a top 15 small forward in the 2015 class, ranked highly even after suffering a severe knee injury before his sophomore year.

The shoe never seemingly dropped with Mitchell, as he even posed for an "O-H-I-O" picture with fellow Ohio State commits Austin Grandstaff, Daniel Giddens and A.J. Harris at the LeBron James Skills Academy in July.

Tonight, however, Mickey severed ties with Ohio State and reopened his commitment.

Best of luck to him as he continues his search for a better fit.

Yes, I follow all of this stuff, very closely.  ALLEGEDLY,  he left to be 'close' to family.  He is still several hundred miles, several hours drive, from such.  I'll leave it at that.  I have to run along now, I have an ice sales meeting with a group from Greenland.

-2 HS
IGotAWoody's picture

I believe several hundred miles IS INDEED much closer than over a thousand. And there's no "ALLEGEDLY" to this, their father IS dealing with a serious illness. Add to that the fact that their mother died of colon cancer when she was only 44, and you have several concrete, verified reasons for the transfers.

Not surprised at all. As soon as we lost Mike, I called this. People said the two kids were different, but as soon as Mike was out of here, Mickey didn't stand a chance at coming here. In my opinion, this one is a BIGGER loss tho than Mike. I watched both kids film, and In my opinion... Mickey was MUCH better at his sport than Mike (and Mike was pretty dang good at his). Really sad about this one, but again saw this coming from over a year away.

TLeeUpInThisJ's picture

This isn't horrible news for Ohio State basketball, to be honest. Mitchell is an electrifying athlete and he would have been fun to watch in Columbus, but I don't think this is so bad for Ohio State...

OSU was in a scholarship crunch. There are some excellent guys in the 2016 class that have OSU at the top of their list; VJ King, Omari Spellman and Derek Funderburk are all top 50 in their class next year and OSU looks like the early leader for all three. If Esa Ahmad commits, OSU would only have 1 available scholarship (with Mitchell on board) for all three. It'd suck seeing Spellman and Funderburk go to a B1G rival b/c we didn't have the scholarships. I'm sure Matta would try to work something out, but that isn't an ideal way to go. Mitchell is now gone, but there will be another very strong recruit to take his place this year or next.

Esa Ahmad isn't the flashy athlete Mitchell is, but I think his game is more complete (Ahmad can hit jumpers). I think Ahmad is a really good player and could be a major contributor for multiple years. I'm not too optimistic about Bragg committing to OSU -- it'd be great to get him but he'd likely be a one-and-done guy.

It's a shame we won't see either Mitchell display their athleticism in Columbus -- both are athletic freaks in my eyes. I wish Mickey and the family well, but I really don't think this is that bad of news for Ohio State. The recruiting pipeline looks loaded.

+1 HS
ToetotheFace's picture

I don't know, in my opinion without the long injury and early commit Mitchell would have gotten a much higher ranking. He is a FAR better passer than Ahmad, Bragg most likely is going to Kansas or Kentucky so he isn't really the relevant in this comparison. Mitchell wasn't a raw athlete; he had great ball handling skills, court vision, and ability to finish at the rim to go along with athleticism. With his athleticism I'm sure Matta would have turned him in to an excellent defender as well. Sure he didn't have the greatest shooting touch yet, but he had the potential to be a triple-double capable point forward type in college, and with all the shooting they have brought in recently I would rather have him over Ahmad.

Now that isn't to say I don't like Ahmad, because I do quite a bit. However I don't agree with the notion that this is more positive than negative for OSU as I think Mitchell had the most potential of that group, and we don't know whether more openings would have come about after this next season anyways(nor do we know for sure those three would all sign with OSU). I do agree that tOSU will be fine though, they will have plenty of talent in the 2016 class, and they already have a ton of young talent on the team right now.

I don't think we would have lost either Mitchell if Mike hadn't been redshirted. I know he was injured early on but he was healthy early in the season. I'm still a little dumbfounded about why Urban ( a coach who has stated on several occasions that he doesn't like to redshirt his players) redshirted 2/3 of the freshmen last year only to burn 1 during the bowl game. The lack of faith the staff showed in Mike (and the dream 14)  made it a lot easier for him to go home to be with his dad than it otherwise would have been....without Mike at Ohio State, Mikey's decision to stay home became a lot easier also.

+10 HS
Squirrel Master's picture

You have nothing to base that off of. Yes there were a lot of redshirts but that doesn't mean Mike and the rest were capable of playing. You are just speculating that is what happened.

I'm pretty sure an I'll father carries more weight in his decision than petty stuff like that.

Absolutely agree with this.  I have suspected for awhile, that Vrabel's player usage philosophy and his closeness to our LB coach who I also suspect of not up to normal Urban standards clashed with Meyer privately.  There were occasional almost snarky comments made after the bowl game by Urban about player usage.  I have always had a feeling that the coaches we lost were told to go somewhere else.  I only wish Luke F went with them.  I hold him almost solely responsible for the tarnish on the silver bullets.

Poison nuts's picture

Regarding Mike Mitchell leaving, have people considered that he just may not have been as college-ready as we'd all like to think & therefore wasn't played that year? Just a thought. People seem to want to blame the staff for not playing him, but he was a true freshmen & even in HS, was very raw. Most of his plays were made by sheer athletic ability & not necessarily by reading the offense & being in the right place during the play. Maybe he wasn't quite up to snuff for the college game at the time. Not everyone is. He won't be playing for Texas Tech this year so we won't see him until 2015 to finally see what he's got.

On Mickey, it's a bummer, but oh well. Win some, lose some. At one point he probably took a hard look at the fact he would be pretty far from home & his brother was gone - leaving him without any family nearby. Pretty sure he committed at least partially to be at college with his brother. Hopefully Matta can pull a UFM & get someone as good or better. Tough loss, but the sun actually did come up today...

+1 HS
allinosu's picture

Yes he had a summer injury but was ready by October and Fickell decided he didn't want to waste a red shirt which did not sit well with him or his father. Ken Mitchell (father) has been interviewed a few times after Mike left and he continues to go to all of his childrens functions. Ken said Mitchells don't like to sit and watch. Florida is still in for Mickeys commitment so I don't see his fathers health being a major factor. This the way to decommit. Good luck to you Mickey

I realize this is going to get all kinds of backlash but I really don't think he was all that special. I'm sorry but I didn't think Mitchell was really all that great.

+4 HS
HighBallAce's picture

Please let me clarify my statement. I don't think the young man is a bad kid by any means nor do I think he doesn't have any talent at all. He's a very good ball player but I don't think he was a right fit for Ohio State. I also don't think it's right to put the young man down for deciding to go elsewhere. He has every right to do so and should not be put down for that. Again, I just don't think he's a right fit for Ohio State. I may be wrong but I don't think so.

It always hurts to have a decommitment, but as already mentioned above, there is a severe scholarship crunch for OSU in 2016. Between one and done players, and those who stay two years, maybe three, you can hardly bank scholarships anymore. OSU is going to be just fine without Mitchell. As regards Mitchell, I suspect the reality of his father's condition, along with the realization of being so far away from home, finally sank in. There are still two top 50 uncommitted recruits for 2015 in the State of Ohio, and one of them, Carlton Bragg, at least lists OSU as a possibility. As you well know, Michigan has benefited greatly when OSU has not had scholarships to give. Trey Burke and Caris LeVert were two ballers from Ohio signed by Michigan fairly late in the recruiting process. Neither were offered by OSU, and I'm sure both would have been interested. With the sustained success Matta has had at OSU, this is a great opportunity for OSU to either go after a late blooming prospect in 2015, or have another spot for one of the 2016 recruits on the horizon.

Ohio State has a much better shot at landing Esa Ahmad than Carlton Bragg. However, without Mickey Mitchell, OSU now has room to take both. And, like you said, if we only get one of those guys, which I think is likely, it opens up a spot for the 2016 class.

I'm not going to be politically correct: the whole family seems flaky and the father excuse was just that. I hope Matta realized a while back that the kid was a lost cause, and that we haven't lost ground with players who are just as skilled on the court, and less skilled at doubletalk.

Not surprised, can't believe he played it out so long. I wish the Mitchell's nothing but the best. My only concern is for thier dad. That said, there are colleges much closer than TT such as SMU and TCU so not sure if they live in Plano why they are going to Lubbock. Heck, tamu is closer to Plano as is Texas, Houston And other d1 schools. Oklahoma is much closer as well. I don't believe there is an issue here, but if his Dad is ill, and he wanted to play close to home, there are better D1 programs closer than Lubbock. That said, Who cares, I hope they both do well.
