He's surrounded, but away he goes!

2017 is the 75th anniversary of Ohio State's first national championship season. To honor the achievement, this series will post articles from the Columbus Citizen Journal on the day they ran in 1942.

The Citizen Journal did not run a preview the day of the game. Due to this, let's take a look at the front page article by Lew Byrer that ran on Sunday. Think of this as the Instacap. Tomorrow you will get to read the multiple articles that were in the CJ's Sunday Sports section.

Power

Paul Brown tonight stood even or better with every coach he has faced since he took over the reins as Ohio State's head man.

When his Buckeyes trounced Northwestern 20-to-6 before 46,000 home-coming fans here this afternoon they evened the score with Lynn Waldorf and his Purple Wildcats---the only team to defeat the Bucks last year---Mr. Brown's first at Ohio State.

Today's victory was the fifth in a row for Ohio State this season. The Bucks have now defeated Ft. Knox 59-to-0, Indiana 32-to-21, Southern California 28-to-12, Purdue 26-to-0 and Northwestern 20-to-6.

To this point, the 1942 Buckeyes have outscored their opponents 165-39 and Brown was able to get the bad taste of the '41 loss out of his mouth.

While Ohio completed only two of its eight pass attempts for 18 yards as Northwestern was completing nine out of 20 for 172 yards the Bucks displayed their overwhelming advantage on the ground.

Led by Fekete and Sarringhaus the Buckeyes gained a net total of 324 yards from scrimmage against only 42 for the Wildcats.

Bucks Had to be Good

The Bucks were better in some ways today than at any time this season.

They had to be. They got off behind the eight-ball through a couple of breaks which went against them in the first quarter.

They had to just keep battling away until they battled out of the hole resulting from those breaks.

But battle they did---first stopping two strong Northwestern threats and then crashing through in the second quarter to take the lead.

Score Twice In Fourth

They added to that lead with a second touchdown early in the fourth quarter, saw the Wildcats threaten to come from behind by scoring a touchdown on their own and then went out and iced the game with a third score.

They were still ripping the tired Wildcats to shreds when the game ended and a fourth touchdown might have resulted had it lasted a little longer.

Again Ohio State was the better conditioned team.

The Wildcats had plenty of fight. But they fought themselves out and the Bucks were still going strong when it ended.

With Northwestern in the rear view mirror, Byrer turns his attention to Ohio State's next opponent.

Badgers Are Next

Today's game was the first out-of-town for the Buckeyes this season. They're also on the road next Saturday, meeting Wisconsin's undefeated Badgers at Madison.

Just as today's game was tougher than last week's with Purdue, next Saturday's is expected to be tougher than today's.

And they'll be tough from here on in with Pitt furnishing the only breathing spell on a schedule which calls for the Bucks to meet Wisconsin, Pitt, Illinois, Michigan and Iowa's Seahawks in a row.
