A fourteen team playoff could help to expand the playoffs while ruling out human error in selection, maintain the importance of the regular season, and only add ONE extra game. To do so you would eliminate conference championships. This might not be the most popular idea but would help to remove the "extra game" coaches complain about when talking about an extended playoff. Instead the top two from each conference (based on record or division champ) would proceed. The fourteen teams would consist of the top two from each of the P5 conferences, the top 2 of the G5 conferences, and 2 at large teams (gives teams from tougher divisions a second chance). The teams would then be split into two "divisions" (think basketball) based on their current playoff ranks. #1 would have a bye in the first tier and play the winner of #4 vs #5. The tiering would look similar to this.

While #1 gets a bye #'s 2 and 3 get a favorable match-up against lower tiers like in basketball. 4 and 5 sets up a very cool and competitive match-up. Each division would have one representative from each conference. This would also maintain the importance of rivalries especially against scUM as it could see who gets to play into the playoffs.
