Hall of Famer Jim Brown says that his 1964 NFL championship ring, which is listed for sale in an online auction, was stolen from him years ago.

“It was stolen from me many years ago, in the late 1960s,’’ the former Cleveland Browns running back told the Pioneer Press. “I’m surprised to hear that it’s publicly for sale because whoever got it should know that I didn’t give it up.’’

Lelands.com is auctioning the piece of 16-karat gold, near-mint piece of jewelry. As of this writing on Monday, there have been four bids, with the current high bid sitting at $33,275. There had been a reserve of $25,000 listed.

According to the item description, "this is the very ring presented to the immortal Jim Brown for his only world championship in the National Football League" and that it was "obtained directly from a Brown immediate family member and sold by Lelands.com in 1998."

Lelands claims that Brown himself inspected the ring and acknowledged its authenticity at that time. Further, the website states: "The ring has remained in one of the finest Cleveland sports collections since its original purchase from the 1998 Lelands auction. The provenance and chain of title is well-documented: Jim Brown to family member to Lelands to Cleveland Sport Collection auction buyer back to Lelands.com and now to you."

Brown disputes these claims.

“I’m going to see what I can do about it,’’ Brown said to the Pioneer Press.

The '64 championship was the last one in major Cleveland sports history and the only title in Brown's NFL career. He rushed for 114 yards on 27 carries and added three receptions for 37 yards in the Browns' 27-0 shutout of the Baltmore Colts.

Brown said he believes there is a police report from when the ring originally was stolen and says he would like it back.

“I’d really appreciate that,’’ Brown said. “That would be very cool.’’

I don't trust a word that he say's because he has been known to be a hypocrite! plus if he claims there is a police report on it would he still not have the report. Something of that much value to you one would think a person would hold on to the report i know i would.

keep the report for 40 years....you sound like a idiot, that is what the police are for....Brown is a great person and even though i don't agree with his politics, he has still lived a life that should be respected....

He's sure roughed up his fair share of women for someone that's lived a life to be respected.

"But I have done so with both men and women. So do I have a problem with women? No."

At least he's an equal opportunity beater!

Cant believe it was stolen until further evidence is reported. At the moment it actually looks like Jim is the one being dishonest. He has been known to make himself and others look like victims when it wasn't exactly warranted.

Mark my words..I don't need acceptance. I'm catching interceptions on you innocent pedestrians.

Like when he wormed his way in the Clarrett fiasco and called Andy Geiger a "slave master"?

Oh for sure, but calling someone a douche doesn't grab headlines and get the attention one may crave.

He should hire O.J. to steal it back for him.

Just say no to italics abuse.

I may be an idiot but i learned years ago to hold on to reports and receipt after not having them and having to repay bills i already paid. I have phone bills gas bills and elec. bill that are 15 years old. I had to repay a 120 phone bill because i did not hold on the damn receipt to show i had paid it.

So yes i hold on to those things just in case and keep a folder for each in my filing cabinet everything from my utility to any major purchase i make so if im idiot for doing so well so be it. And just for the fact i feel he should have keep a police report i speak from experience because i still have a police report on two stolen mop heads from my garge 30 years ago.
