What is Your Fantasy Rock Band??

Sauce Bauss's picture
February 19, 2014 at 6:35pm

If you could take musicians (from any era or style) and form the greatest rock band in the world, who would you draft?

Here are your positions in the band (and my picks for my fantasy rock band):

Lead Guitar: Jimi Hendrix (Jimi Hendrix Experience)

Rhythm Guitar: Eric Clapton (Cream, Yardbirds, Solo)

Bass Guitar: John Entwistle (The Who)

Drums: John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) (It was close between him and Kieth Moon, but I already had a member of The Who)

Keyboards: Elton John (Solo)

Lead Vocals (Male): Freddy Mercury (Queen)

Lead Vocals (Female): Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane)

Bench (Pick 6 who should be in the band but wont "start"): John Lennon, Kieth Moon, Chuck Berry, Eddie Van Halen, Ray Charles, John Paul Jones

What do you think 11W? Who would make up your fantasy rock band?

I will go with two lineups:

Lead vocals: Chris Cornell, Soundgarden

Lead guitar: Jerry Cantrell, Alice in Chains

Bass: Cliff Burton, Metallica

Drums: Danny Carey, Tool

Lead vocals: Eddie Vedder, Pearl Jam

Lead Guitar: David Gilmour, Pink Floyd

Bass: Geezer Butler, Black Sabbath

Drums: John Bonham, Led Zeppelin

Solid choice with Cliff Burton ...... a lot of people remember Jason Newstead playing base for Metallica, but Cliff was the guy creating all that lightning fast early stuff

Danny Carey is seriously underappreciated. His ability to change strange time signatures within a song is unparalleled and his technicality is one of the best I've ever heard. People hear Tool and automatically get turned off but if they could just listen to the drums, man would they be in for a treat. But then again, the same people who would automatically get turned off by a Tool song probably couldn't careless about how this man can play the drums...

You mean there are people out there that would summarily dismiss Tool as a good band?  Perish the thought!

Lead Guitar: Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
Lead Vocals: Ann Wilson (Heart)
Bass: John Entwistle (The Who)
Drums: Buddy Rich (Jazz drummer, but he was still the best.)
Keyboards: John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin, so talented as a musician)

Man this is so tough... mine would probably be a combination of most of the suggestions here.

Can we have Lennon/McCartney be the song writers?

And when we win the game, we'll buy a keg of boooooooooze!! And we'll drink to old Ohio 'till we wobble in our shoes.

Lead Guitar: Edward Van Halen (VH)

Drums: Neil Peart (Rush)

Bass: Billy Sheehan (Various bands)

Vocals: Brad Delp (Boston)

Bench: Tony Iommi; Lead Guitar, John Bonham; Drums, Michael Anthony; Bass (Primarily for his background vocals), Vocals; Robert Plant

As you can see, I like my music with big hair, soaring vocals and screaming guitars. In other words, I grew up in the 1970's.

Dude, you almost got the EVH, Billy the Bassplayer combo.  Eddie wanted to replace Mike with Billy around the time of Fair Warning.  Could have been epic with Al on drums and DLR manning the mic.  Billy was also in Dave's first solo band along with Steve Vai.

Good call on Sheehan, been a fan of his for years, had a friend that was from Upstate New York that turned me on to his original band, Talus. Got to see him play with Steve Vai when they were both in David Lee Roth's band.

ESPN starting the SEC channel to concentrate on the SEC is like Baskin-Robbins starting a new store to concentrate on selling ice cream.

Nobody after 1986.

If it isn't already evident, my taste in music is the opposite of my taste in women: loud, angry, and heavy.

I can't promise that these musicians would actually hit a groove together, but here goes:

Lead Guitar: Dicky Betts (Allman Bros)

Rhythm Guitar: Jimi Hendrix (of course this would be a waste of his talent, but he throws in a lot of innovation even when he's just playing rhythm.  Also gives the option to have dueling guitars)

Bass Guitar: Bootsy Collins (James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic)

Percussion section: (Rusted Root)

Fiddle: Eileen Ivers

Accordion (that's right) : Juan Küffner (Zydepunks)

Mandolin: Chris Thile

Lyricist (words) : Todd Snider

Lyricist (melody) : Jackson Browne

Female Vocals: Shakira

Male Vocals: Dee Snider Bruce Springsteen

Cowbell: Will Ferrell (Blue Oyster Cult) DiasporaBuck

Jimmy Page on rhythm??

I can't allow this to happen.

And when we win the game, we'll buy a keg of boooooooooze!! And we'll drink to old Ohio 'till we wobble in our shoes.

brandonbauer87's picture

I couldn't justify not putting him in the lineup. I just have a problem with clashing genres. My taste in Rock music is really to diverse to just make one fantasy band. Apologies.

BassDropper's picture

Add Freddie Mercury to One Direction and I'm in heaven.

OSU_ALUM_05's picture

To be read in a hushed nature show voice:   Bass sets the trap .... steps back into the shadows .....ponders whether the first response will take the low hanging fruit of 1D mockery.. or whether they'll piece it all together and take the politically incorrect homophobia route ..... time will tell ...Bass just has to wait to see what happens and then pounce on his prey

Yeti's have feelings too.

Or I could legitimately want to see a band composed of 6 of my all-time favorite singers.

still don't understand the hate 1D receives on this board.

Too much to think about, but my band's drummer is definitely Neil Peart.

This is a slow process for me.  I'm at Neil Peart on drums, and now adding--Paul Rogers on vocals.
